UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.) notched two goals as No. 9 Penn State field hockey put together a dominating 5-0 win at Drexel on Friday night. Four different Nittany Lions scored in the contest.
Penn State improved to 9-2 on the season, while Drexel moved to 6-4. The Nittany Lions outshot the Dragons, 14-7. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kylie Licata (Mountain Top, Pa.) recorded her third shutout of the season.
Penn State got on the board first 11:16 into the match. Senior Laura Gebhart (Mount Joy, Pa.) fed a pass to Herold from the right wing. Herold corralled it and put it in for a goal to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead. The assist tied Gebhart for eighth on Penn State's all-time list.
Later, Drexel goalkeeper Jantien Gunter made a save and kicked the ball out of the circle. Senior Amanda Dinunzio (State College, Pa.) collected it and dribbled in, ripping off a shot from just inside the arc to the left corner of the cage and past Gunter with 4:33 to go in the period.
The score would remain 2-0 at the break, with Penn State outshooting the Dragons, 5-1, in the first half.
Exactly five minutes into the second stanza, redshirt senior Natalie Buttinger (Kitchener, Ontario) put a one-timer past a charging Gunter to push the lead to 3-0. Herold assisted on the play.
With 23:01 to go there was a scrum for the ball just inside the circle. Gebhart retrieved it and fired an impressive backhand shot past the goalkeeper. Just 38 seconds later, Herold found the cage again for her fourth multi-goal game of the season. Penn State held onto the 5-0 lead for the remainder of the contest.
The Nittany Lions are back in action at No. 14 Temple on Sunday, Oct. 5 at noon.
