SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Penn State women's hockey team faltered in its first College Hockey America (CHA) game of the year and fell to Syracuse 3-1 on Friday.
Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.), who leads the conference with 0.78 goals per game, scored her seventh of the season in the loss.
The Nittany Lions (3-4-2) opened the game by outshooting the Orange, 6-3. But 11 minutes into the game, Kaillie Goodnough put Syracuse (2-3-4) on the board.
However, Penn State's sniper was able to knot the score midway through the second period. Dakota Derrer was called for interference and a minute in to the advantage, Petersen got the equalizer thanks to helpers from Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.).
Just over a minute later, however, the Orange regained their lead with a tally from Julie Knerr. Syracuse would add a third goal 38 seconds into the third period for the final 3-1 score.
Celine Whitlinger's (Garden Grove, Calif.) record moved to 2-3-0 after a 31-save performance.
Penn State continues its series at Syracuse with a 3 p.m. game on Saturday.
