UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- As the Hokie Invitational finished up Sunday, the Penn State women's tennis team left with a title before heading back up north. Victoria Kisialeva (Toronto, Canada) captured the Singles Flight A title after leading Cerezo-Codina of Virginia Tech 7-6(3), 6-6 before Cerezo-Codina was forced to retire due to injury. In the third place match, Kim Surin (Montreal, Canada) fell to Salome Kivitashvilli of VCU 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. "I am very excited for Victoria as she captured the singles title," said head coach Chris Cagle. "The weekend was highlighted by strong single play by Devan, Kim, Taylor, and others on the team."
Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished in third place in the Singles Flight C after beating Alex Tachovsky of Morehead State 6-4, 6-1. Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) was defeated by Meg Napolitano of Radford 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the third place match in the Singles Flight D. Both Melissa Minniti (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Kelly Mengel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) picked up wins as their opponents retired.
In the Doubles Flight A, the duo of Blik/Sapogova were defeated in the finals to Mita/Stoica of Virginia Tech 8-3. In the third place match, Surin/McCluskey defeated Kivishvilli/Barscheheuskaya of VCU 8-2. "Doubles was a big focal point for us throughout the fall, so it was great to see success there," said Cagle.
"It was great to use this tournament as a building block for the next couple of weeks in practice in order to get ready for the ITA Regionals," said Cagle. "The results we compiled this weekend were nice and we can build off of that the in the future."
