UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State Lady Lions (1-3) hit the road for the first time this season when they head to Atlanta for the Georgia State Thanksgiving Tournament. Penn State faces Liberty (2-2) in the first game of the tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. The host Panthers will face Samford in the second game of the day at 4 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and the consolation contest is slated for Sunday at noon.

LAST TIME OUT

  • A Nyla Rueter layup with 1.4 seconds left in the game broke a 54-54 tie and Penn State's final shot fell short as the Lady Lions fell to St. Bonaventure, 56-54, on Tuesday.
  • The Lady Lions held the advantage for much of the game, leading for 31:03 of the 40 minutes.
  • Sophomore Sierra Moore led the way with a game- and career-high 15 points - nine coming in the second half - and added five rebounds and three assists.
  • Freshman Lindsey Spann continued her solid start to the season by chipping in 13 points and a career-best five assists.
  • Penn State turned the ball over just once in the second half, but were held without a field goal in the final 7:08 of the game after establishing a nine-point lead.

    SCOUTING LIBERTY

  • The Flames are 2-2 on the season with wins over VCU and Saint Joseph's in overtime, but are coming off of a 73-62 loss to Elon.
  • Karly Buer leads Liberty with a 12.5 scoring average thanks in part to a 45.0 field goal percentage and an 83.3 free throw percentage.
  • Ashley Rininger has led the Flames in rebounding each game with double-digit performances in every outing. She leads the team with 10.8 average to go along with a 12.0 scoring mark.
  • Sadalia Ellis is also accounting for double figures with an 11.8 scoring average with a team-best 18 assists in four games.

    ALL-TIME VERSUS THE FLAMES

  • The Lady Lions lost the only previous meeting with Liberty, a 78-70 decision in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
  • The game against the Flames is also the only time that Penn State has faced a Big South opponent.

    LAST TIME VERSUS LU

  • The Flames overcame a five-point Penn State halftime lead by shooting 50 percent in the second half on the way to a 78-70 win over the Lady Lions in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
  • Penn State took a seven-point lead just after the break with a Tanisha Wright jumper, but the Flames reeled off a 16-2 run to take an eight-point lead and never looked back.
  • Wright completed her outstanding Penn State career with a team-high 19 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists.
  • Jess Strom, also playing in her final game as a Lady Lion, added 13 points and five assists, while Jennifer Brenden had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

    SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE

  • The Panthers are 2-0 on the season with wins over North Florida and Thomas.
  • Brittany Logan is shooting 55 percent from the field and leads the team with a 13.5 scoring average and 8.5 rebounding mark.
  • Kayla Nolan adds 12.5 points per game, while Alisha Andrews chips in 12.0 points per outing.
  • Makeba Ponder is the final Panther averaging double figures at a 10.0 mark.

    ALL-TIME VERSUS THE PANTHERS

  • This would be the first-ever meeting between the Lady Lions and Georgia State.
  • Penn State has never faced a Sun Belt team.

    SCOUTING SAMFORD

  • The Bulldogs are 1-1 on the season with a win over Alabama A&M and a loss to Memphis.
  • Taylor Reece is averaging a team-best 14.0 points per game while shooting 48 percent from the field.
  • Destiney Elliott accounts for 10.0 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game, while Hannah Nichols is 6-for-8 from the field on the season and is averaging 8.0 points per outing.

    ALL-TIME VERSUS THE BULLDOGS

  • This would be the first-ever meeting between the Lady Lions and Samford.
  • Penn State is 3-0 all-time against current SoCon teams with wins over Chattanooga, East Tennessee State and Furman.

    TURKEY TOURNEYS

  • The Lady Lions have won the last three Thanksgiving tournaments that they have competed in.
  • Penn State won the Junkanoo Jam last season with wins over Oregon State and Illinois State.
  • PSU also has Thanksgiving tourney wins in the Radisson Thanksgiving Tournament at Cal State Northridge in 2012 and the John Q. Ascuaga Nugget Classic in 2011.

    HEADING HOME TO THE ATL

  • The Georgia State tournament marks a homecoming for three Lady Lions - senior Tori Waldner and sophomores Kaliyah Mitchell and Peyton Whitted.
  • Transfer Brianna Banks is also a native of Atlanta, but is not able to travel with the team due to NCAA transfer rules.
  • Waldner is from the Atlanta suburb of Milton, while Mitchell is from another Atlanta suburb, Stone Mountain, and Whitted is from Suwanee, Georgia.

    CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR

  • The Lady Lions' 1-3 record on the season is deceiving as Penn State's three losses are by a total of eight points.
  • In each loss, the Lady Lions have had a chance to tie or take the lead in the final 11 seconds.

    MOORE CAREER HIGHS

  • Sophomore guard Sierra Moore continues to adapt quickly to her role with the Lady Lions.
  • Moore posted her third double-digit scoring performance in the first four games of the season with a career-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting against St. Bonaventure.
  • With her effort against the Bonnies, Moore surpassed the 100 point plateau for her career, scoring 15 in the contest. She scored 63 during her freshman season at Duke and has 49 through four games at Penn State for a career total of 112.
