Lady Lions Fall to Samford in Overtime, 59-56

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The Penn State (1-5) led by as many as 16, but a 10-0 run to end regulation by Samford (4-2) forced overtime where the Bulldogs claimed a 59-56 win. SophomoreSierra Moore (Hanover, Pa.) had a career-high 17 points with three assists and two steals to lead the Lady Lions.

FreshmanLindsey Spann(Laurel, Md.) posted her sixth consecutive double-digit game with 10 points to go along with five assists and three steals. SophomoreJenny DeGraaf(Springboro, Ohio) was a spark off of the bench with her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. DeGraaf was 5-for-9 from the field and sparked a 13-0 Penn State run in the second half with seven tallies in that stretch.

SeniorTori Waldner(Milton, Ga.) was solid in her final game in her home state with eight points and 11 rebounds, while fellow GeorgianKaliyah Mitchell(Stone Mountain, Ga.) added eight points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

The Lady Lion defense came out strong forcing six turnovers in Samford's first six possessions en route to a 6-0 lead thanks to layups by Mitchell, Moore and Spann in the first four minutes of the game. Neither team could find its offensive flow during the middle portion of the opening frame as Penn State's lead remained two possessions.

With Penn State leading 11-7, the Lady Lions went on an 8-2 run thanks to a layup byPeyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) on a feed from Spann, two free throws from Moore, a steal and layup by Spann and two freebies by Mitchell to close out the run and make it a 19-9 Penn State lead with 2:46 remaining. The Bulldogs scored four of the last six points of the frame to send the teams into the break with the Lady Lions leading by eight (21-13).

The Bulldogs came out of the locker room got back-to-back three-pointers by Taylor Reece to cut the Penn State lead to two (21-19) just one minute into the frame. Out of a timeout byCoquese Washington, Spann scored on a fadeaway jumper and added two free throws on an ensuing possession to push the lead back to six (25-19) with 16:47 on the clock. Samford again pared the lead to a single possession (25-22) after one free throw and a jumper with 15:33 to play.

DeGraaf came off of the bench with seven consecutive points to spark a 13-0 Lady Lion run. After DeGraaf's spurt, Waldner sandwiched a pair of layups around a Mitchell score to give Penn State a 38-22 lead with less than 10 minutes to play. The Bulldogs would not go quietly with an 8-0 to make it a 38-30 game with 6:37 left.

The teams exchanged scores until Samford went on a 10-0 run to end the game and send it to overtime with the score tied at 46-46.

Waldner opened the overtime period with a pair of free throws, but the Bulldogs responded with a 9-1 run to take a 55-49 lead with 1:46 left. After an exchange of scores, Moore scored five consecutive points to make it a one-point game (57-56) with 16 seconds left.

Penn State fouled Samford on the ensuing inbounds pass and Reece missed both free throws to give the Lions a chance. Moore was called for an offensive foul with eight seconds to play and her basket was waived off. Samford's Krista Stricklin made both of her free throws for the 59-56 lead. Spann's three-point attempt hit off the rim with 0.3 seconds left. Waldner's shot at the buzzer was waived off and the Bulldogs claimed the three-point win.

The 2014-15 Penn State Lady Lion Basketball season is presented by Kish Travel and Kish Insurance. Penn State continues its three-game road swing with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Syracuse on Thursday, Dec. 4 before returning home to host Wagner on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.

Lady Lion Basketball single-game and season tickets are available by calling 1-800-NITTANY. Single-game tickets range from $10-17 for adults and seniors and $5-11 for youth (12 and younger). Season tickets are $105 for adults and $52 for youth (12 and under). Additionally, the Family Season Ticket package, which features two adult tickets and two youth tickets in the family section in section 114L, is $210. There is a $15 handling fee per order on season tickets.

The PNC Flex Books are $120 and give fans 12 vouchers, 10 that can be redeemed in any combination for Nittany Lion and Lady Lion Basketball tickets throughout the year and two extra vouchers for the Nittany Lions' Coaches Vs. Cancer game and the Lady Lions' Pink Zone game. The Lady Lions also have a pair of mini-plans available this season with the B1G Deal and the Five for the 50th plans. The B1G Deal is a mini-plan that includes the nine Big Ten Conference home games. Tickets for the B1G Deal are $90 for adult sideline, $63 for youth sideline, $63 for adult baseline and $45 for youth baseline tickets. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Women's Athletics at Penn State, there is a Five for the 50th mini-plan. The plan features a ticket to the following games: South Florida (12/21), Illinois (1/4), Rutgers (1/10), Michigan State (2/11) and Ohio State (2/26). The package is $50 in honor of the 50th anniversary.
