UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's hockey program will debut a special, one-time jersey on Saturday, Jan. 24 in support of THON, a student run philanthropy that has raised over $114 million in the fight against pediatric cancer.
Penn State (11-7-3, 5-2-1-0 Big Ten) will face Northern Michigan (9-8-5, 6-8-4 WCHA) on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in a nationally televised game on Big Ten Network. The game will be PSU's annual THON Game as well as the second annual teddy bear toss.
The white jerseys will feature Penn State on the front with numbers in block lettering. The sleeves and base of the jersey will have two blue lines that wrap around the sweater, while the back has the word "THON" on the name plates.
Fans will be able to bid on some of the THON jerseys at the arena, while other jerseys will be up for auction on GoPSUsports.com. All proceeds from the jersey auctions will be donated to THON To help fight pediatric cancer.
For the teddy bear toss, fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used teddy bears to toss on the ice during the second intermission. All bears will be donated to THON and included in welcome packages for Four Diamonds Families when they arrive on campus for THON weekend (Feb. 20-22).
Additionally, "Faceoff Against Cancer" signs will be available for fans to write names of people that they fight cancer for. These signs will be spotlighted throughout the Northern Michigan game on the video boards at Pegula Ice Arena.
Penn State's Student-Athlete Advisory Board will be collecting donations for THON at all gates as well. Last year, THON raised a record $13.3 million for the kids.
Penn State men's hockey will host preseason-Big Ten favorite Minnesota during THON Weekend (Feb. 20-21) at Pegula Ice Arena. Students who have tickets to the game, but won't be attending due to THON, can donate their tickets to families to go in their place. The student tickets donated will go directly to THON Families to see Penn State take on Minnesota by visiting this site.
The Nittany Lions currently sit atop the Big Ten standing with 16 points, one ahead of Michigan, who has two games in hand. Penn State has already eclipsed its win overall and Big Ten win total from last season, while welcoming sellout crowds to Pegula Ice Arena in 9 of 10 games this season.
WHAT IS THON?
Childhood cancers are the number one disease killer of children in the U.S., more than asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and pediatric AIDS combined. THON's mission is simple: to conquer childhood cancer by providing outstanding emotional and financial support to the children, families, researchers, and staff of the Four Diamonds Fund.
THON has been partnered with Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Medical Center since 1977. Four Diamonds provides outstanding support to children and families by insurance, and funding research performed by a team of pediatric oncologists at the hospital. Since partnering, THON has raised more than $114 million for Four Diamonds and the fight against childhood cancer.
The fundraising efforts culminates with a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon from February 20-22, 2015. More than 700 students will stand, while tens of thousands of spectators will circulate through Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center to support these dancers and Four Diamonds Families in attendance.
