UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.. -- The No. 10 Penn State women's lacrosse team opened the 2015 season with a resounding 15-7 victory over Lehigh at Holuba Hall on Saturday. Sophomore Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) had a career-high five goals.

Penn State (1-0) used a 12-2 run spanning the two halves. Sophomore Abby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.) contributed three goals to the cause and junior Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) made 10 saves.

"I think it was a good game overall for us," said Penn State head coach Missy Doherty. "Lehigh is really good and we hadn't seen them play before, so it was hard, from a scouting sense, to be ready for their particular plays. I think we adjusted pretty well and Emi [Smith] made some awesome saves today."

Six players scored goals for the Nittany Lions, five of whom found the back of the net multiple times. Lazo led all scorers with five goals, followed by Smucker who finished with three.

Seniors Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) and Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) each scored twice in the season opener. Senior Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) added a goal.

The Nittany Lions trailed just once in the game, facing a 2-1 deficit at the 20:26 mark of the first half. Lazo scored the tying goal 38 seconds later, followed by the go-ahead goal with 18:46 left in the first half.

Penn State opened the second half with a five-goal run. McCormick struck first, giving the Nittany Lions a 9-4 lead just 1:16 into the second half. Lazo followed up with three straight for her third, fourth, and fifth goals of the game. Kelly Lechner bookended the run with a free position goal, giving Penn State a 13-4 lead with 21:13 to play.

Penn State, which improved to 23-0 all-time against Lehigh, out-shot the Mountain Hawks, 25-19. Lehigh (0-1) edged the Nittany Lions in ground balls, 12-11. Penn State scored four goals from the free position.

Penn State returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 18 when it hosts in-state rival Bucknell. The game will be played in Holuba Hall at 7 p.m. Admission to all regular-season home games is free of charge.
