Penn State Splits Contests at Big Ten Match Play Championship

Feb. 15, 2015

Palm Coast, Fla., Feb. 15, 2015 - Penn State fell to defending Big Ten Champions Minnesota, 4-1-0, but rallied to overcome Indiana, 4-1-0, in day one of Big Ten Match Play at the Hammock Beach Resort Sunday.

"We had a closer match with Minnesota in the morning than the 4-1 score reflects," said head coach Greg Nye. "After a quick turn and change of course, I felt we had a very sustained quality effort in our match with Indiana at the Ocean Course."

The No. 6 Nittany Lions kicked off conference play against No. 11 Minnesota. Sophomore Christian Elliot (Port Perry, Ontario) earned the team's only point against the Gophers, topping Tyler Lowenstein 4 and 2. The rest of the Blue and White lineup, though, surged back Sunday afternoon to be on the opposite end of a 4-1-0 tally against the Hoosiers.

Senior Jens Talbert (Little Rock Ark.) and sophomore Cody Cox (Milford, Pa.) each topped their opponents by a score of 4 and 3, while freshman Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) defeated Indiana's Will Seger 4 and 2.

Junior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) won 1-up over Matthew Weber of the Hoosiers to round out day one of play.

Penn State will resume competition at 7:30 a.m. on the Ocean Course against No. 13 Rutgers, followed by a 1:20 p.m. tee off against No. 10 Wisconsin.

The final day of the 2015 Big Ten Match Play Championship will resume Monday morning at 7:30 a.m. ET. Follow live scoring at www.AJGA.org.
