UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.. -- UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 10th-ranked Nittany Lion women's lacrosse team was dominant from start to finish in a 17-2 victory over Bucknell Wednesday night at Holuba Hall. Sisters Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) and Dani Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) combined for nine points to pace the offense.
We had a lot of people work hard," said head coach Missy Doherty. "We got everybody playing time and some experience. So, I think overall it was a good game for us. There are definitely things, even in that game, we want to get better at: the draw, clearing, but it was nice to have a game where everybody could contribute. I think that's a strength of our team right now is we can score from a bunch of different spots."
Penn State (2-0) had 11 different goal scorers and a pair of hat tricks from the younger Lazo, Steph, and senior midfielder Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.). The elder Lazo, Dani, dished a game-high four assists and added a goal for her five-point day to lead all scorers.
The Nittany Lions received two-goal games from Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, N.J.) and Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.), while Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) tallied three assists. Mosketti had a team-high four draw controls as well.
The Nittany Lions never trailed in a game that saw the score 6-0 in the opening 11:07 of play. Steph Lazo opened the scoring 80 seconds into the contest from the free-position before Loizeaux connected on her first tally of the season from McCormick for a 2-0 lead after two minutes.
Lechner was fed by Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) and Steph Lazo doubled her goal total for a 4-0 lead with 25:20 remaining. Penn State made it 5-0 on Haley Ford's (White Hall, Md.) first of the season from Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.). The assist by O'Donnell was her first collegiate point.
Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) registered her first goal of the season for a 6-0 lead with 18:53 to go in the first half as McCormick capped her three-point day with her third helper.
Bucknell scored its only tally of the first half on an Eve Lukowski goal before Penn State rattled off six straight goals to end the half at 12-1.
During the second 6-0 run, Mosketti scored back-to-back goals before the Lazo sisters connected--Steph-to-Dani for a 9-1 lead with 12:26 to go. Coffey then tallied her first of the game and third of the season before Abby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.) scored off another Dani Lazo pass. Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley, Pa.) was the beneficiary of Dani Lazo's third assist for the 12-1 lead just 28 seconds shy of halftime.
Bucknell's leading scorer Emily Kookegey scored her eighth of the year to cut the lead to ten at 12-2 just five minutes into the second half. O'Donnell wasted little time in her answer, scoring her first collegiate goal 73 seconds later to re-gain the 11-goal cushion.
Lechner tallied her two goals in back-to-back fashion with the second being helped by Dani Lazo's fourth assist of the night for a 15-2 advantage with 15:55 remaining in the contest.
Loizeaux would score with 13:16 left on a Megan Callaghan (Dallas, Texas) assist before Dani Lazo scored her first of the season assisted by Loizeaux.
Reigning Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) made two saves and allowed only one goal in 30 minutes of work, while Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) made her season debut. Freshman netminder McKenna Coyla (Kennett Square, Pa.) came on in relief of Rainone for her collegiate debut.
Penn State out-shot Bucknell, 24-8, as the Nittany Lions scored on 71 percent of their shots, while limiting Bucknell to two shots in the second half.
The Nittany Lions forced 23 Bucknell turnovers and a 7-for-18 showing when clearing the ball. Smucker had a team-high four caused turnovers, while Coffey posted three.
PSU won the draw control battle, 11-10, while clearing the ball successfully 13 times in 14 attempts.
Penn State returns to action on Wednesday, February 25 when it travels to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne. Opening draw at Rooney Field is set for 4 p.m.
