PITTSBURGH, Pa. - After taking control from the first competitor, the No. 12 Penn State women's gymnastics program claimed a dominating 196.175-193.350 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday inside of Fitzgerald Field House.
Penn State swept the top three spots in the all-around, won each of the team event crowns and posted at least four of the top five scores on all four apparatus. The Nittany Lions posted their third highest balance beam score of the years (49.025) and their fourth highest floor exercise score (49.050).
"I'm really proud of the way we competed today," said head coach Jeff Thompson. "It is always good to go on the road and get a win. It's days like today where you can identify small things that we need to work on and improve on as we move into the championship portion of our season.
"We're looking forward to getting back home for our Senior Night next weekend and honoring these four special seniors."
Senior Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) claimed her second straight all-around with a total of 39.225. It is the third all-around win of the season for the senior, who also tied for the event crown on the uneven bars. She tied Pitt's Taylor Laymon for the title on the uneven bars with a 9.825, her fourth win on the event this year. She finished third on the balance beam (9.825), fourth on the vault (9.800) and tied for fifth on the floor exercise (9.775).
For the second straight week, senior Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) finished second in the all-around. She scored 39.175 in the competition. She finished third on three different events; posting a score of 9.825 on the vault, 9.800 on the uneven bars and 9.825 on the floor exercise. She also posted a 9.725 on the balance beam to finish tied for seventh.
Freshman Briannah Tsang (Vancouver, British Columbia) claimed a pair of event titles on her way to a third place showing in the all-around. The rookie boasted three scores of 9.800 or better on the afternoon, but a misstep on the balance beam hampered her all-around score. She won the vault title and topped the floor exercise charts with identical scores of 9.875. She tied for third on the uneven bars at 9.800 and score 9.325 on the balance beam.
In their first road meet in three weeks, the Nittany Lions got off to a solid start by taking a .700 lead after six performances. The uneven bars saw Penn State score 48.975 and place all five of their scoring gymnasts among the top seven on the apparatus, including event winner Sanabria-Robles. Lauren Li (Plano, Texas), Tsang and Welsh all tied for third on the event at 9.800 and Alex Witt (Odessa, Fla.) tied for seventh at 9.750. Pitt opened their meet on the vault with a 48.275.
Penn State ramped up the scoring in the second rotation with a 49.125 on the vault, including the top five scorers. Tsang tied her third highest score on the vault with a 9.875 to win the event, while Emma Sibson (Allen, Texas) finished second at 9.850 and Welsh claimed third at 9.825. Sanabria-Robles finished fourth at 9.800 and Li tied for fifth at 9.775. The Panthers logged a 48.525 on the uneven bars, with Laymon tying for the event title at 9.825.
Penn State's 49.050 on the floor exercise during the third rotation was over one point better than Pittsburgh's 47.900 on the balance beam and extended their lead to 147.150-144.700. Tsang tied her second best score of the season on the event at 9.875 and topped the rotation. Welsh finished third with a 9.825, Sibson claimed fourth at 9.800 and the duo of Oni Timothy (Rochester, N.Y) and Sanabria-Robles tied for fifth at 9.775. Lindsay Offutt's 9.850 tied for the top spot on the balance beam during the third rotation for the Panthers.
A 49.025 on the balance beam closed out the meet for Penn State and sophomore Nicole Medvitz (Paramus, N.J.) tied for the top spot on the event with a 9.850, tying her second best score on the event this season. Sanabria-Robles and Christina Postiglione (Selden, N.Y.) tied for third on the apparatus at 9.825 and Sibson finished fifth at 9.800. The Panthers closed out the meet with a 48.650 on the floor exercise, led by a second place showing by Offutt at 9.850.
