P enn State men's hockey sophomore forward David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) collected his second Big Ten weekly honor on Tuesday morning as he was named the conference's Second Star of the Week.
Goodwin was tabbed second star for leading the conference with five points during a weekend sweep of rival Michigan. The sophomore tallied two goals and three assists to help keep Penn State's hopes alive of a Big Ten title.
On Friday, Goodwin scored the game's opening goal, assisted by Tommy Olczyk (Long Grove, Ill.) as the Nittany Lions pounced on the Wolverines, 4-0, en route to the 6-4 victory. Goodwin carried a plus-two rating in the game.
As for Saturday, the lefty forward would only match his career-high, and the team-high, registering four points in a 4-3 win. Goodwin played a hand in every goal, scoring the first, lending the primary assist on the next two goals and earning the secondary assist on Olczyk's eventual game-winner in the second period.
Goodwin's plus-three rating on Saturday moved him to the top of Penn State's chart (plus-18), and in a tie for second in the Big Ten with the league-leader in assists, Mike Reilly of Minnesota. Those two trail only Michigan's Zach Hyman (plus-21).
The Missouri native earned his second Big Ten weekly honor this season and third of his career, while the team has 10 total weekly accolades this season.
The Nittany Lions never trailed this weekend as Goodwin contributed to five of the 10 goals scored. The wins inched Penn State (31 points) closer to the Big Ten title race. Michigan State (34 points) maintained its three-point edge over PSU with its sweep at Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Penn State's sweep kept Michigan on 33 points and Ohio State's split with Minnesota (33 points) even with the Wolverines.
The top four teams face off this weekend in the final regular-season matchups as the Big Ten champion will be crowned and seeding determined for the Big Ten Tournament the following week in Detroit. Penn State is at Minnesota, while Michigan State and Michigan play a home-and-home series.
Friday's game at Minnesota takes place at 8 p.m. ET with television coverage through American One Sports, distributed to local markets. Saturday's game will air on Fox Sports North Plus at 8 p.m. ET. Both games can be seen on BTN2Go.
