FINAL STATISTICS

COLUMBIA, S.C. - LHP Josh Reagan held Penn State hitless until the seventh inning, as No. 7 South Carolina prevailed in a pitchers' duel, 3-0, in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night in Carolina Stadium. Both teams combined for just eight hits, as LHP Geoff Boylston (West Chester, Pa.) was strong on the mound for the Nittany Lions.

Reagan (1-1) went 6 2/3 innings for South Carolina (13-3), yielding just two walks before first baseman J.J. White (Lansdowne, Va.) roped a double down the left field line with two outs in the seventh inning. Reagan then walked third baseman Christian Helsel (Altoona, Pa.) and was relieved. He struck out four on the night.

The stellar performance was necessary, as Boylston (0-1) had a career night too, only getting into trouble in the second and third innings. The Gamecocks first got on the scoreboard in the second when a hit batsman turned into an unearned run after a stolen base and a pair of throwing errors. They then added two more in the third as Max Schrock and Kyle Martin hit back-to-back RBI-doubles.

Boylston finished with career bests for innings pitched (6) and strikeouts (7), yielding the three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk. First-year RHP Jared Fagnano (Williamsport, Pa.) was perfect in two innings of relief, keeping the Lions in contention until the last inning.

The Nittany Lions brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning as right fielder Aaron Novak (Ambler, Pa.) singled with two outs to extend his hitting streak to eight games, matching a career best, and Helsel walked. However, RHP Cody Mincey was able to get the final out before any runs scored, earning his first save of the season.

The two teams will conclude their two-game series Wednesday starting at 7 p.m. It will be streamed live on SEC Network +.
