FINAL STATISTICS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Behind Marlaina Laubach's (Northampton, Pa.) complete game shutout, the Penn State softball team defeated Loyola Marymount 1-0, Thursday afternoon in its third game of the Capital Classic. Laubach went the full seven, only surrendering four hits while walking a pair and striking out four to earn her fifth victory of the season.

The game was scoreless through the first three innings as LMU only mustered a pair of hits off of PSU's sophomore starter.

The Nittany Lions broke through against the Lions from Loyola in the fourth as a Shelby Miller (Sugar Land, Texas) walk and a Kristina Brackpool (Valencia, Calif.) single set the stage for Macy Jones (Ashburn, Va.), who drove home the game's first run on a groundout to short.

From there Laubach stayed consistent in the circle only allowing two more hits off Marymount bats. She did find some trouble in the sixth however after giving up a leadoff double and then hitting the next batter to put two on and no one out.

After a fly out to center, another walk loaded the bases but a stellar defensive play on a grounder to Miller at third nabbed the would be tying run at the plate and allowed Laubach to strike out the final LMU batter and preserve the one run lead.

A 1-2-3 seventh cinched it for Laubach and her mates as they went to 10-12 on the year and are now 2-3 during the spring break trip to California, with two more games left to play.

Lexi Knief (Ramsey, N.J.) was the lone Lion who had more than one base knock Friday, going 2-3 with a walk, while Miller had the most base on balls vs. the Lions from the West Coast with her pair.

The final contests of the Capital Classic for Penn State will occur Saturday, with the first match-up featuring PSU and Sacramento State at 4:30 p.m., and then a rematch with LMU at approximately 6:45 p.m.
