PRINCETON, N.J. -- The 11th-ranked Nittany Lion women's lacrosse team was undone by committing a season-high 16 turnovers in a tough 12-11 loss at No. 13 Princeton on Wednesday afternoon. Junior midfielder Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) had a team-high three goals as PSU's late-game comeback fell short.

Penn State (5-3, 0-0 Big Ten) dropped its second game in three outings, unable to hold off a patient and precise Princeton (5-1, 1-0 Ivy League) team that won its seventh game vs. PSU in the past eight games.

Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) and Haley Ford (White Hall, Md.) led the Nittany Lions with three points as seven different players tallied a goal. McCormick and Ford had two-goal games.

Down 11-8 with 8:45 remaining, Ford scored her second of the game, and her fifth of the season, from the free-position to cut the deficit to two. Seventy-five seconds later, Cyr cut the deficit in half, making the score 11-10 with 7:29 remaining.

Princeton's Olivia Hompe put the Tigers ahead by two once again with 3:09 to go. Cyr's third of the day came with only 1:48 remaining from the free-position.

Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley, Pa.) would win the ensuing draw as Cyr would again be fouled in the fan with 54 seconds setting up another free-position shot. Unlike the previous attempt, this one sailed wide and Princeton's Liz Bannantine would force a game-ending turnover to seal the Tiger win.

Penn State fell behind 2-1 early before going a 3-1 run from 23:15 to 16:54 on goals by Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.), Ford and Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.).

Princeton went on a 3-0 run for a 5-4 halftime lead. The four goals represented the fewest scored in a half by Penn State this season.

The second half featured a series of answers with Penn State tying the score twice only to see the Tigers tally seconds after the ensuing draw. The Tigers would finally stretch the lead to two on Erin Slifer's fourth goal of the day with 21:19 remaining for an 8-6 advantage.

Including Slifer's fourth goal, Princeton had a 4-2 spurt that led to the 11-8 advantage, setting up the exciting final eight minutes of play.

McCormick (113 assists) moved inched closer to the Penn State career assists record held by Julie Tice (1997-2000) who tallied 115 helpers. McCormick (226) sits eight points behind fourth place (234, Beth Thompson, 1983-86) on the PSU points chart.

New Jersey natives Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hills, N.J.) and Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) each tallied goals in their returns to the Garden State. Lazo had a two-point game in her return following a two-game absence.

Penn State out-shot Princeton, 29-21, and turnovers were even at 16. Princeton netminder Ellie DeGarmo had seven saves.

Penn State travels to Drexel's Vidas Field in Philadelphia on Sunday for a 4 p.m. opening draw.
