WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Penn State men's golf team surged to a fifth place finish in the final round of the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate Tuesday, carding the lowest single-round score in the field. The Nittany Lions shot a 281 on the final 18 holes to total an 868, earning them a fifth place finish in a 29-team field.
"Our steadily progressing play through the event is reflective of coming out of winter, but also shows a growing resiliency in our team," said head coach Greg Nye. "Shooting the low round of the tournament today was significant in our growth."
Junior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) fired an incredible 68 in the third round to total 211 strokes, finishing tied for fourth on the leaderboard.
Freshman Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) continued his rise in day three of play by shooting a 215 (74-72-69) and placing tied for 15th. Senior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) stayed consistent the trend of Nittany Lions saving their best round for last, notching a 71 to bring his score to a 220 and a tied-for-36th finish.
Sophomore Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) tallied 222 strokes and sophomore Cody Cox (Mildford, Pa.) posted a 242 through 54 holes.
Radford claimed the 2015 Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate Championship by edging Loyola (Md.) in a three-hole playoff. It was Matt Oshrine of Loyola, though, who captured the individual crown.
Penn State returns to its spring slate on April 11 when it travels to Columbus, Ohio for the Kepler Intercollegiate.
