UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A trio of Penn State divers will accompany diving coach Dennis Ceppa down to Greensboro, N.C., this weekend to take part in USA Diving's Synchronized National Championship.
Senior T.J. Schenkel (Richboro, Pa.) will be joined by junior Logan Knauss (Audubon, Pa.) and freshman Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.) as the three will take to the diving board, Saturday, Apr. 11 to compete in the three meter.
Schenkel owns the team's highest score in the event this season with a 349.80 mark against Navy (Jan. 25) on senior day in McCoy Natatorium. Scanlon also had a banner day vs. the Midshipmen, tallying a career best score of 320.70. Knauss did not officially compete for the Nittany Lions this season after transferring from Wisconsin following his sophomore year of 2013-14.
Synchronized diving is a bit different from the usual collegiate competition as a pair of athletes from the same team both dive simultaneously with identical dives. The divers are judged on their timing of take-off and entry into the water as well as the execution of the dive itself.
The sport became a part of Olympic competition at the turn of the century for the Sydney games (2000) and the top competitors from this year's event will go onto represent the Stars and Stripes on the national stage. Some of those events include the World Championships, Pan American Games and the Junior Pan American Championships.
