ITHACA, N.Y. -- A sluggish start did not deter the No. 12 Penn State women's lacrosse team as it used a 7-0 first-half run en route to a 14-10 victory over Cornell Tuesday evening at Schoellkopf Field. Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) fired three goals to pace the Nittany Lions who won their sixth straight game.
Lazo registered her ninth multi-goal game of the season and her sixth game with at least three goals. Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) and Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) each posted three-point evenings on two goals and an assist.
Penn State (11-3, 3-0 Big Ten) had its 7-0 run during a 14-minute span to overcome an early 3-1 hole. Lazo started the run with a wraparound effort to trip the Cornell (8-5, 3-2 Ivy League) lead to 3-2. Then Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley, Pa.) collected a loose ball in front of the net to tie the score with 17:54 remaining in the half.
Lazo doubled her tally five minutes later for Penn State's first lead of the game before Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) connected on a free-position effort with 11:52 to go for a 5-3 lead.
Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) picked up another loose ball and scored at 7:39 leading to Katie O'Donnell's (West Chester, Pa.) goal with 4:20 remaining to cap the 7-0 run and give PSU an 8-3 advantage.
Cornell would score the final two goals of the half reducing its deficit to three goals at 8-5. The Big Red looked to have made it three straight goals only 2:35 into the second half, but a goal was disallowed due to an illegal stick.
The Nittany Lions struck for back-to-back tallies by Lazo, on the free-position at 23:54, and Kelly Lechner's (Silver Spring, Md.) dash through the defense with 22:38 remaining as PSU doubled up Cornell, 10-5.
The Big Red struck back on a pair of Lindsay Toppe tallies at 19:57 and 17:55 to get with three, 10-7.
Coffey's second goal of the game came on a free-position attempt with 16:34 remaining and Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) scored on a Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, N.J.) feed to re-establish a five-goal cushion, 12-7, with 11:21 remaining.
The Nittany Lions increased the lead to six on a pretty give-and-go between Cyr and McCormick with 5:37 to go. Cyr took a long stretch pass from the right wing, sent it down low to McCormick who fed the cutting Cyr in front for the junior's second of the game and 23rd of the season. For McCormick the helper was her 30th of the year, giving her 124 for her career and producing her third 30-assist collegiate season.
The Big Red wasted little time in their response as Toppe completed her hat trick nine seconds later. Toppe scored her fourth of the day with four minutes remaining to make the score, 13-9, in favor of Penn State.
Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) made six saves in the winning effort, while her counterpart Renee Poullott finished with 10 goals.
Penn State improved to 8-2 all-time against the Big Red in women's lacrosse, winning for the second straight season and in Ithaca for the first time since April 19, 1974 (21-1).
For the game, PSU out-shot Cornell, 32-22, while winning the ground ball (22-19) and draw control (15-9) battles.
The Nittany Lions return to Big Ten Conference play on Sunday for a crucial matchup at No. 7 Northwestern. Opening draw at Lakeside Field is set for 1:00 p.m. ET with a live stream on BTN Plus.
