UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team fired a 276 in the second round of the Rutherford Intercollegiate Saturday afternoon to secure first place out of 12 teams heading into the final 18 holes. The Nittany Lions 572 team tally gives them a seven stroke lead over Eastern Michigan.
Senior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) leads the 75-player field with a 4-under 138. Talbert is tied for first with Georgetown's Sam Madsen after carding a season-low 68 in the second round of the day on the Blue Course.
Fellow senior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) is tied-for-sixth overall through 36 holes, shooting a 75 and 68 in rounds one and two, respectively. Freshman Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) notched a 145 in his Rutherford Intercollegiate debut and stands tied for 10th. Sophomore Cody Cox (Milford, Pa.) is just a stroke behind Miller with a 146 total.
Sophomore Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) rounded out the starters for the Blue and White, shooting a 150 and earning a tied-for-25th ranking.
Freshman Josh Rinehart (York, Pa.) also made his Rutherford debut Saturday playing as an individual and shooting a 148 (73-75). Senior Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) was right there with Rinehart, also hitting a 148 (75-73). Both individuals will begin the final round tied for 15th.
Junior Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) matched Elliott in the first two rounds as an individual, recording a 150. Senior Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio) shot a 151 on the day.
Tee times for the final round of play will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday. No live scoring is available for the tournament, but round results are posted here on Golf Stat Results.
