COLLEGE PARK, Md.. -- The No. 8 Penn State women's lacrosse team ran with top-ranked Maryland Thursday night at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, but couldn't rally for the victory in a 13-10 loss.

"I'm really proud of our team's fight tonight," said head coach Missy Doherty. "We were able to hang with the No. 1 team in the nation, get within a goal. It was a great night for women's lacrosse and the Big Ten."

Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) and Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) each tallied hat tricks, while Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) handed out five assists for the second straight game.

Penn State (12-4, 4-1 Big Ten) had its seven-game win streak snapped by the Terrpains (17-0, 5-0 Big Ten), who claimed the first Big Ten championship and the No. 1 seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament at Rutgers. PSU will hold the No. 2 seed and play Friday, May 1 at 8 p.m. on Big Ten Network.

Down five at halftime, Penn State put together a 4-0 run in 3:38 to bring the game within a goal, 8-7, with 20:01 remaining. Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) was the catalyst for PSU's first two tallies, scampering to the right to score her 21st of the year at 23:39 before finding a wide open Mosketti 19 seconds later, making the score 8-5.

Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) got into the act two minutes later, slicing through the vaunted Maryland defense to score her 29th goal of the year with 22:35 to go.

Maryland would look to end PSU's run at three on a Taylor Cummings effort, but Ally Heavens (Garnet Valley, Pa.) drew a charging call, forcing the turnover and setting up Penn State's next possession.

Lazo brought PSU even closer two minutes later, making a beautiful roll around the cage for her first tally of the night to trail Maryland, 8-7, with 20:01 to go.

Penn State's run was keyed by winning three of four draw controls, after losing 11 of the first 12 in the opening 30 minutes. Mosketti led the Nittany Lions with six draw wins.

The explosive Terrapins showed their firepower by winning possession and scoring three straight in an 87-second span to open an 11-7 lead with 16:11 remaining.

PSU wouldn't quit, after Lazo traded a goal with Maryland's Zoe Stukenberg, Mosketti scored with 12:03 left off McCormick's fifth feed before Lazo completed her hat trick with 10:10 to go, trailing 12-10. Despite multiple opportunities to cut into the lead, the Nittany Lions wouldn't get any closer as UMD's Taylor Hensh scored the final goal at 6:54.

Maryland raced out to an early 6-0 lead, connecting on six of the first seven shot attempts. UMD would hold a 7-1 lead early before Penn State ran off two in a row from Mosketti and Heavens. Both goals were assisted by McCormick as PSU trailed 7-3 with 14:53 remaining in the half.

Maryland would score with five minutes remaining to hold an 8-3 halftime lead, PSU's largest deficit of the season. The Terrapins controlled the circle with 11 of 12 draws. The reigning Tewaaraton winner, Cummings had a game-high four goals, 10 draw controls and four caused turnovers for the Terps.

The game was Maryland's narrowest victory since Feb. 21 in a 13-11 win over No. 2 North Carolina. Penn State is the only Big Ten team to stay within seven goals at the half and within three goals by game's end.

Maryland held edges in shots (34-20), draw controls (16-9) and free-position goals (4-0). The Nittany Lions scooped up more ground balls (16-11) and had more saves (10-6).

Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) had seven saves in 42:34 of action, having to leave the game with a knee injury in the second half. McKenna Coyle (Kennett Square, Pa.) had three saves, while allowing four goals in 17:26 of game time.

In all, six Nittany Lions registered goals, including Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) who scored PSU's opening goal of the game. Penn State successfully cleared on 14 of its 16 attempts.

McCormick has tallied 10 of her 40 assists this season in the past two games, bringing her season point total to 61, while Lazo upped her team-leading goal total to 34. Coffey is one marker away from her second 30-goal season of her career.
