Incoming Baseball Freshman Pitches No-Hitter in State Playoffs

June 4, 2015

PINE GROVE, Pa. -- Incoming freshman Penn State baseball pitcher Eli Nabholz threw a no-hitter Wednesday night to lead Pottsville H.S. to a 1-0 victory in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA playoffs.

According to the Pottsville Republican & Herald, Nabholz completed the no-no with just 77 pitches, striking out 13 Spring Grove batters. His lone mistake was hitting the No. 9 hitter with a pitch with two outs in the sixth inning. "He just came out and was dominant from the very beginning," Pottsville coach Mike Welsh told the paper. "He came out and showed tonight what type of pitcher he is.

"The people in attendance were able to see a great performance, one for the ages. It's certainly one of the all-time best performances in our program's history on a special night for us, the first round of states."

The 6-6, 230-pound right-hander officially signed with Penn State last fall. "Eli is a quality young man, who happens to be a really good pitcher," Penn State head coach Rob Cooper said in November. "He is extremely competitive and hard working. We believe he can make an immediate impact as a true freshman."
