ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT STATEMENT
John Connor Darcey, a member of the Penn State men's lacrosse team, died in an automobile accident early Friday morning in Boston. A junior from Wellesley, Mass., Darcey was 21.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Connor," said Jeff Tambroni, Penn State men's lacrosse head coach. "He was an incredibly well liked and gifted young man with a bright future. Our hearts go out to the Darcey family during this unthinkable tragedy."
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to Connor's family, teammates and friends," said Sandy Barbour, Director of Athletics. "The Penn State family has suffered a tremendous loss and we are deeply saddened. This is a difficult time for everyone who knew Connor and we offer our sympathy, support and assistance to anyone in need."
The Nittany Lions' starting goalkeeper, Darcey logged all but two minutes this past season. He posted five wins, with a 10.07 goals-against average and .553 save percentage, making 10 or more saves in 11 of 14 contests. He was named the first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after winning the first start of his collegiate career, a 15-save season-opening victory over Vermont. Darcey was selected to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team after making 17 saves in a 14-9 semifinal loss to eventual conference champion Johns Hopkins.
Darcey had an opportunity to play and earn a victory in his hometown on March 10, as Penn State defeated Marist, 9-8, in a match played at Babson College.
A four-year starter at Wellesley High School, Darcey earned high school All-America, league MVP and Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic honors in consecutive years. He was an ESPN Warrior Top 40 selection his junior season as one of 40 of the nation's top returning high school players, and was named to Metro West All-Scholastic Super Team his senior year after recording a .770 save percentage.
Darcey was pursuing a degree in communication arts and sciences.
