June 30, 2015 UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Five members of the Penn State men's and women's fencing teams will take part in the 2015 World University Games. The event runs July 3-14 in Gwangu, Korea.
2015 NCAA Champion Andrew Mackiewicz (Westwood, Mass), who will be a sophomore next year; Nobuo Bravo (San Francisco, Calif.), who will be a senior in 2015-16, will compete in the men's foil; Jessie Gottesman-Radanovich (Fresno, Calif.), soon to be a junior; Kasey Iverson (Baskin Ridge, N.J.), who will be a sophomore in '15-16; and Desree Ortega-Furgeson (Wyoming, Mich.) will all represent the nation in Korea. Penn State's five competitors account for over 20 percent of the team total of 24 athletes.
In addition to the five athletes competing, Penn State head coach Wes Glon will be the squad's Chef de Mission and Lion assistant coach George Abashidze will be one of the two coaches. Penn State fencing has a long history of athletes competing in the World University games with nearly 30 all-time competitors.
