- 2015-16 Schedule
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The NCAA Regional participant Penn State men's golf team revealed its 2015-16 schedule Thursday. The 11-event schedule is highlighted by the Nittany Lions' home tournament, the Rutherford Intercollegiate, closing out the regular season April 16-17 on the Blue and White Courses.
It begins, however, with a challenging fall slate.
"We open in the fall with an outstanding event at Duke, the Rod Myers Invitational," Greg Nye, Penn State head coach, revealed. "We return to Wake's event at the Primland, and ETSU's Bank of Tennessee. We finish the fall with a new event in college golf, playing the Mountaineer Intercollegiate at the spectacular Pete Dye Club."
Following the fall season Nye outlined, Penn State will open spring play with Big Ten Match Play slated for Feb. 12-13 at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Beach, Fla. The Nittanay Lions and Michigan State will see each other again two weeks later in a dual matchup in Houston, Texas. The Spartans finished ninth at the 2015 Big Ten Championships.
Tournaments at Florida State (March 11-13) and William & Mary (March 20-22) are scheduled for March. Penn State finished fifth out of 30 teams last season at the event hosted by W&M at the Kingsmill River Course in Williamsburg, Va.
The Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State (April 9-10), and Penn State's own Rutherford Intercollegiate (April 16-17) close out the regular-season slate leading up to the Big Ten Championships April 22-24.
The conference championships will be played on Victoria National in Newburgh, Ind., where the Nittany Lions finished in a tie for third in 2015. The performance catapulted them the NCAA Regional for the first time since 2010.
Three of the five golfers to participate in the NCAA Regional Championships will return in 2015-16, led by rising senior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.). Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.), who started each tournament of his freshman season, and Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) also will lead the Nittany Lions.
