UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After posting one of the best seasons in recent history, the Penn State men's golf team continued to reach extensive levels of success in the classroom. Two Nittany Lion golfers were named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, while the team was one of 10 Division I programs given President's Special Recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America for achieving a 3.5 grade-point average or higher.
Senior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) and junior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) each earned All-America scholar honors. Talbert graduated in May with a degree in finance, while Dornes also is studying finance heading into his final season at Penn State.
As a team, the Nittany Lion golfers posted a 3.62 GPA for the academic year, joining only Stanford as programs from 'Power 5' conferences to top a 3.5. The remaining eight teams were: Bradley, Brown, DePaul, ETSU, Francis Marion, Harvard, Utah Valley and Valparaiso. Just four programs, including Penn State, participated in NCAA Regional competition while producing top academic honors.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
