MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. - The Penn State men's golf team returns to action Monday and Tuesday at the Primland Collegiate Invitational hosted by Wake Forest at Primland in Meadows of Dan, Virginia.
The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes of play on Monday and an 18-hole final round on Tuesday, with play beginning at 8 a.m. ET both days. The course is a par-72 (7,053 yards).
ABOUT THE TOURNEY
The second-annual event is hosted by Wake Forest, roughly 64 miles north of its location in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Demon Deacons won their inaugural event a year ago. The remaining teams in the field are: Auburn, Davidson, Loyola (Md.), North Carolina, Pepperdine, Virginia Tech and Yale. Three teams - Wake, Davidson and Loyola - also participated in the Nittany Lions' first tourney of the season at Duke, Sept. 12-13.
Penn State finished third out of nine teams at Primland event last season. The Nittany Lions were led by Cole Miller, who matched his career-low single round tally of 66 in round three to post an 11-under 205, rising to finish tied-for-third overall.
THE STARTERS
Tee times for all golfers will be set Sunday afternoon. Penn State will send JD Dornes, Cole Miller, Christian Elliott, Charles Huntzinger and Geoff Vartelas into action.
Elliott worked his way into the starting lineup after qualifying play in University Park this week. It is the first action of the season for the junior from Port Perry, Ontario, who participated in nine tournaments and the NCAA Regional Championships last season.
LAST TIME OUT
The remaining four golfers all took to the course two weeks ago at the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, North Carolina, helping the Nittany Lions to an impressive third-place finish. Huntzinger led the PSU contingent with a 10th-place finish in his first collegiate tournament.
Geoff Vartelas, a senior captain from Cromwell, Connecticut, finished in a tie for the No. 21 spot after tallying a 76 in the final round. Fellow senior captain JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) tied Huntzinger with a team-leading 74-stroke performance in the third round, for an overall 26th-place finish. Sophomore Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) wrapped up the tourney tied for 34th place
UP NEXT
Following the Primland Collegiate Invitational, the Nittany Lions will return to action at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Oct. 9-11 in Johnson City, Tennessee. They finished third out of the 15-team field at the tournament a year ago.
