MEADOWS OF DAN, Va. - The Nittany Lion men's golf team finished fourth at the Primland Collegiate Invitational at Primland in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, Tuesday. The event was called after 36 holes of play because of ongoing inclement weather in the area.
Penn State was in fifth place when play was halted Monday with three golfers and four holes left to play. All three - Cole Miller, Christian Elliott and JD Dornes - birdied their final holes Tuesday morning to complete the round. The Nittany Lions passed Pepperdine to take over fourth in the nine-team tournament.
"The team played very well through the fog, swirling winds and rain on Primland, a superb golf course. Charles [Huntzinger] played nearly flawless with only one bogey in two rounds," Greg Nye, PSU head coach said.
North Carolina won the tournament (-18), following by Auburn (-13) and host Wake Forest (-6) before the Nittany Lions claimed the No. 4 spot. They led Pepperdine (E), Yale (+14), Virginia Tech (+15), Loyola (Md.) (+19) and Davidson (+28).
Charles Huntzinger and Geoff Vartelas each completed two full rounds Monday, carding a 5-under and 3-over, respectively, on the day. Huntzinger ended up in a tie for fourth overall, leading the Nittany Lions in each of the first two tournaments of the year.
Dornes finished in a tie for 10th place, moving six spots from rounds one to two, after going -1 in the latter frame. He birdied three holes on the back nine, including two of the last three. Miller made the biggest jump in the standings, climbing from 28th-place after round one with a +2 to the No. 12 position with a 2-under showing.
Elliott rebounded with an even score in round two after finishing the first one at +11. He produced three bogies on the back nine, including the final hole Tuesday morning.
The Nittany Lions return to action at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Oct. 9-11 in Johnson City, Tennessee. They finished third out of the 15-team field at the tournament a year ago.
