UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team opens the 2015-16 season at the Rod Myers Invitational, hosted by Duke University, Saturday and Sunday on at the Duke University Golf Club.
The 54-hole event will feature 36 holes of play on Saturday and an 18-hole final round on Sunday, with play beginning at 7:40 a.m. ET both days. The Bermuda grass course is a par-72 (7,154 yards).
Penn State and host Duke will be joined in the RMI field by Davidson, East Carolina, Kansas, Kansas State, Liberty, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, Notre Dame, Tulsa, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington and Wake Forest. ECU is the reigning RMI champion after posting a 15-under 561 in a rain-shortened event last season.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
Duke has hosted an intercollegiate men's golf tournament for the past 42 years, and the event was rebranded in 2010 as a tribute to longtime head coach Rod Myers. Myers, who passed away in 2007 after a battle with an acute form of leukemia, guided the Blue Devils to 30 tournament wins, the 2005 ACC championship and seven NCAA Championship appearances during his 34-year tenure at the helm of the program.
PERSONAL CONNECTION
Nittany Lion head coach Greg Nye worked at Duke and for coach Myers, a long-time family friend, in the early 1980s. Nye calls participating in the memorial tournament for his mentor "meaningful."
CAPTAINS ELECT
Geoff Vartelas and JD Dornes were elected team captains for the year ahead by a vote of their teammates. Vartelas participated in five tournaments last season with an average of 74.79 strokes per round and three Top 25 individual finishes. Dornes, a PING All-Region honoree as a junior, led Penn State in scoring average last season, recording 72.78 strokes per round as a starter in all 11 tournaments.
STARTING FIVE
Each Penn State golfer will be grouped with a student-athlete from UNC Wilmington and Liberty, beginning at 7:40 a.m.
