JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The No. 21 Nittany Lion men's golf team is in sole possession of first place after the second round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Saturday afternoon in Jonesborough. After putting up an impressive 11-under team showing in round two, Penn State leads the 15-team field with a 10-under tournament score, four strokes above second-place Kent State.
"Several teams played very well today, and we responded," Greg Nye, PSU head coach said. "Our guys kept their composure even when the ball didn't bounce their way. We are looking forward to Sunday's round."
JD Dornes finished the day 4-under par after notching four mid-round birdies. He hit par on each of the remaining holes to finish with a season-low score of 68. Dornes jumped up 20 spots in the individual standings, coming in at No. 12
Geoff Vartelas and Chris Houston share the PSU team lead in seventh place. They carded identical scores of 72 and 69 in the first and second rounds, respectively, each moving up four spots between days. Each was 2-under at the turn Saturday and picked up a pair of birdies to balance out a bogey down the stretch.
Charles Huntzinger produced a 2-stroke improvement between days and is now tied for 20th and even with par. Cole Miller is sitting in a tie for 32nd after carding a 2-over.
VCU and Virginia Tech, who Penn State was tied with in first after day one, fell to sixth and 11th place, respectively. Kent State currently sits in second (-6), followed by Louisville (-1), Charlotte (-1) and Missouri (E) to round out the top-five.
Individually, Charlotte's Victor Wiggins leads the pack with an average score of 68 through the first two rounds. He is 8-under in the tournament, leading Virginia Tech's Joey Lane by two strokes.
The teams will wrap up the tourney with 18 holes Sunday.
