UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The top-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the Penn State women's hockey team, 5-0, Friday night at the Pegula Ice Arena. Sophomore goalie Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) tallied 33 saves in the contest.

Minnesota improves to 2-0-0 on the season, while Penn State falls to 0-2-0.

"There are a couple of takeaways from an instant look at today's game from my perspective as a coach," head coach Josh Brandwene said. "We're always going to try to build on the positives. I really like what I saw with our penalty kills today. I prefer not be in the box so much, but there is certainly a big difference in our penalty kill today compared to yesterday against the nation's top power play. There is a lot to build on there."

The Golden Gophers set the tone early in the contest as they outshot the Nittany Lions, 17-1, in the opening frame.

From deep in Nittany Lion territory, Cara Piazza passed the puck towards the blueline where Lee Stecklein fired a shot on net. Ehresmann made the initial save, but Kelly Pannek was there for the rebound and put home the puck for the 1-0 lead with 16:46 to play in the first frame.

Four minutes later the Golden Gophers added to the lead off of Hannah Brandt's first goal of the season. Brandt received a pass from Sarah Potomak in front of the Nittany Lion net and fired home a shot for the 2-0 lead.

The Golden Gophers recorded another pair of goals in the second period.

Less than three minutes into the second frame, Taylor Williamson passed the puck to Brook Garzone, who was on the left side of the Nittany lion zone. With the puck, Garzone recorded a cross-ice pass to the right side of the Nittany Lion zone, where Megan Wolfe was cutting towards the net. Wolfe then fired a right-handed shot into the right side of the net for her first goal of the young season.

With under seven minutes left in the second period, Kate Schipper passed the puck to Stecklein who fired a shot from near the point and Pannek redirected the shot for her second goal of the game.

Minnesota tallied the final goal of the game less than five minutes into the third period.

Brandt recorded her second goal of the game off an assist from Potomak and Wolfe. Near the crease, Potomak passed the puck near the front of the net and Brandt connected on a one-timer for her second goal of the 2015 campaign.

Neither team was able to score on a power play attempt as the Golden Gophers went 0-4 and the Nittany Lions went 0-3.

The Nittany Lions take to the road for the first time this season as they travel to Boston, Mass., for a two-game series against the No. 8 Boston Terriers. The series begins Friday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. and concludes on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3 p.m.
