UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State men's hockey team overcame a sluggish start and a reinvigorated AIC side in a 5-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena in front of 5,940 fans. Redshirt-senior Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn.) tallied a pair of points on PSU's first two goals, his first points of the season, to pace an offense that saw five different Lions register goals.

"Scoring at the end of the first was a big (goal)," head coach Guy Gadowsky said. "We came back, we fought back to get ahead and that was big. The guy who got the Thor hammer, which is handed out by the players, was David Thompson. He had a huge block with 10 minutes left in the third when we were up by one goal. We probably weren't as sharp as we could be but I think they were better, too. I think AIC played very well and I have to give them some credit. "

Penn State (4-1-0) found itself in a two-goal hole after only five minutes. AIC (0-5-0) came out with fire, scoring two goals through Jackson Dudley and Travis Douglas. Dudley put home a David Gandara assist after only two minutes and Douglas made good on a power play opportunity.

The Nittany Lions came to life midway through the period on a power play chance of its own as Scheid swung around the net, forced the defense to look one way and found Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alberta) on the left post for his third goal of the season with 7:52 remaining in the first.

Scheid was again the catalyst for the offense two-and-a-half minutes later he scooped up a loose puck on the right wing and beat Hunter Leisner (39 saves) under his blocker to even the score as Scheid pointed to the rafters. The goal was his first of the season and his first while wearing No. 23, a number his late father, Jim, wore while playing hockey at the University of Wisconsin.

A key moment in the game came with only 36 seconds remaining as Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) picked up his third goal of the weekend by diving in on a scramble in front of Leisner's net, putting away a Curtis Loik (North Vancouver, British Columbia) saved shot. Berger's tally was his team-leading fifth of the season as PSU took a 3-2 advantage into the locker room.

The Nittany Lions continued control puck possession and the shot count, improving upon its 19-7 margin in the first 20 minutes with a dominating 15-5 edge in the second. Penn State finally got its goal as Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) went top shelf for his third goal of the weekend with 6:20 remaining in the period.

Penn State was unable to take advantage of a five-minute power play, which came as the result of Bailey More's contact-to-the-head elbowing penalty. More was issued a game misconduct for a hit to the head of Marsh, who briefly left the game, but returned later in the second period. Penn State went 1-for-5 on the man advantage on Saturday.

AIC fought back in the third period as shots were even at 10 apiece. AIC's Shawn McBridge brought his team within a goal with 13:08 left in the frame, putting the puck away in the crease on a rebound.

With the Yellow Jackets pressing, David Thompson's (Glen Mills, Pa.) block midway through the period on a point blank shot in the slot kept AIC off the board. Later Penn State's penalty kill would come up big to put the game away.

Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) stole an errant pass along the boards and chipped it out of the zone and it was deflected into the air where Tommy Olczyk (Long Grove, Ill.) snagged it out with his left hand and was off to the races. Olczyk went one-on-one with Leisner and tallied his second career short-handed goal for a 5-3 lead with 5:08 remaining in the game.

Junior goaltender Eamon McAdam (Perkasie, Pa.) earned his third win of the season, making 19 saves. PSU out-shot AIC 44-22 for the game and 101-47 for the weekend. AIC had 23 blocks to PSU's 6.

Berger was again outstanding at the dot with an 18-6 record on draws. Penn State won the faceoff battle 39-24.
