UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - Her father played on the exact same floor, albeit wearing the orange and white of Tennessee, and Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga,) posted her second career double-double in a hard-fought, 74-66, loss to No. 4/5 Tennessee for the Penn State women's basketball team on Wednesday night inside Thompson-Boling Arena.
The Lady Lions (2-1) led by a basket for more of the third quarter and battled back from down eight points midway through the third quarter to take a one-point lead over the Lady Vols (2-0) with 9:00 to play in the fourth. The lead was never more than four points down the stretch until the Lady Vols converted on some free throws down the stretch.
Whitted posted her second double-double of the season - and her career - with 17 points and 16 rebounds. The rebound total set a career-high, besting her two 11-board efforts in each of the first two games of 2015-16. Her 17 points are the second most in her career (22 pts vs. Holy Cross) and came on the floor her father, Kevin, played on for the Vols from 1993-95.
Teniya Page (Chicago, Ill) tied her career-high with 15 points, while Lindsey Spann (Laurel, Md.) netted 14 points and Kaliyah Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) scored 11. Page and Spann tied for the game -high with five assists apiece, while Page added a game-high-tying three steals.
Penn State came out and pushed the pace for most most of the first quarter, with Mitchell netting nine points over the opening 10 minutes. The lead changed hands three times in the first four minutes, but Penn State grabbed an edge midway through the quarter and held that until the 1:02 mark. With just over a minute left in the quarter, BaShaara Graves hit two free throws to make it a 16-15 game, which held until the break.
The Lady Lions continued to push the pace in the second quarter, as Mitchell found Whitted on the fast break at the beginning of the quarter. The lead changed hands twice more over the next minute before the Lady Vols opened up a nine-point lead with 2:46 to play. Penn State trimmed the lead to five points at the break
Back-to-back baskets for Penn State started the third quarter, as Whitted hit a jumper and Spann followed with a three-pointer in transition to knot the score at 35. The Lady Vole responded with a 10-2 run, capped by a pair of Graves free throws at the 5:12 mark to push the lead to eight points.
The Lady Lions rallied to take a 55-54 lead with 9:00 left in the fourth quarter on a Keke Sevillian (Goodrich, Mich.) layup and grabbed a 57-56 edge on a Candice Agee (Victorville, Calif.) layup with 8:29 to go. The game was tied at 64 when Spann connected on a three-pointer with 5:62 to play, but the Lady Vols closed the game on a 10-2 run.
The Lady Lions will return home for a 2 p.m. tipoff vs. Central Connecticut State at the Bryce Jordan Center on Sunday, Nov. 22.
