CANTON, N.Y. -The St. Lawrence Saints tallied a late goal with 1:52 left in regulation to secure a 3-2 victory over the Penn State women's hockey team Monday night at the Appleton Arena. Victoria Samuelsson (Leksand, Sweden) netted her first career goal for the Blue and White in the loss.
The Saints (8-7-1, 4-2-0) tallied the first goal of the night just 5:51 into the game. Following a pair of SLU shots, Brooke Webster put the puck home for the 1-0 lead for the Saints.
SLU goalie Brooke Wolejko made nine of her 19 saves on the night in the opening 20 minutes of play.
In the opening frame, Penn State (4-8-3, 1-2-3) outshot SLU, 9-6, but SLU led 1-0.
With under four minutes left in the second period the Nittany Lions and Saints began 4-on-4 play and Samuelsson tied the game at one with first career goal.
After Abbey McRae was called for boarding, prompting the 4-on-4 play, the Nittany Lions won the face-off and six seconds later Samuelsson put the puck past goalie Brooke Wolejko and into the back of the net.
Though, the Saints would take the lead back less than a minute later. With both teams still playing with a man down, SLU's Kennedy Marchment recorded her seventh goal of the 2015-16 campaign to take a 2-1 lead in the contest.
Heading into the final frame of regulation, the Saints held a 2-1 lead.
Looking for the game-tying goal midway through the third period, Hannah Bramm (Tampa, Fla.) tied the game at two with her second goal of the season with 9:31 on the clock.
With the game tied at two, both teams kept battling looking for the go-ahead goal down the final stretch of regulation. With regulation winding down, Jenna Marks captured the go-ahead goal for SLU with 1:52 left on the scoreboard
The Nittany Lions played with an empty net for the final 1:14 of regulation, but were unable to tally a shot on goal.
Both teams played smart as Penn State was called for two penalties and St. Lawrence was called for only one. Two of the penalties were called within 40 seconds of each other.
Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) stopped 24 shots in the game; thirteen of Ehresmann's saves came in the final period of play.
The two teams will be back in action again tomorrow at 4 p.m. inside the Appleton Arena.
