UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's hockey team fell to Mercyhurst Friday night, 1-0 at the Pegula Ice Arena. Junior Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) led the Nittany Lion offense with four shot attempts.
The Nittany Lions (3-7-1, 0-2-1) opened the night taking seven of the first eight shots of the game. Penn State recorded its first power play opportunity when the Lakers' Jillian Skinner for a two-minute minor penalty for body checking at the 9:41 mark of the first period.
A few minutes later, Mercryhurst (3-5-1, 3-0-0) went out on the power play when Jordin Pardoski (Rochester Hills, Mich.) was called for cross-checking, but the Nittany Lions were able to hold off the man-advantage. Mercyhurst outshot Penn State, 9-8, in the first 20 minutes of play.
The second period consisted of two penalties by Mercyhurst's Paige Horton and Morgan Stacey for tripping. With the man-advantage opportunities, the Nittany Lions were unable to find the back of the net.
The game remained scoreless until a little over two minutes left in the second period when Mercyhurst's Kathy Donohue scored from the right circle.
Mercyhurst opened the third period on the 5-3 power play, but the Nittany Lion defense was able to kill the Lakers' power play.
Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, Calif.) made 29 saves throughout the game, including a 15-save performance in the second period.
Penn State will be back in action against Mercyhurst Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Pegula Ice Arena.
