ATHENS, Ga./PRINCETON, N.J. ââ'¬" Matt Grillo (Montreal, Quebec), Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.) and Logan Knauss (Audubon, Pa.) led the Penn State men's swimming and diving team after the first day of competition Friday at the UGA Fall Invitational in Gabrielsen Natatorium and the Big Al Open hosted by Princeton in DeNunzio Pool.

In Georgia, Grillo and Stasiunas were the men's top individual swimmers. Grillo swam a season-best 20.28 in the 50 freestyle preliminaries and placed 15th in the finals in 20.35.

"Matt Grillo's 50 was real nice and stood out," commented Penn State head coach Tim Murphy.

Stasiunas scored in the 500 freestyle, placing 16th in 4:28.92. He swam a season-best 4:26.45 in the preliminaries.

The men's top 200 free relay effort, composed of Tomer Zamir (Gesher Xaziv, Israel), Grillo, Zach Kantz (Mount Bethal, Pa.), and Rory Lewis (Kensington, Md.), swam a season-best 1:21.50 to place ninth, while the 400 medley relay team of Zamir, Andrew Schueler (Camden, N.J.), Grillo and Stasiunas also swam a season-best, touching the wall in 3:19.19 to place 13th.

"I think we're doing fine," said head coach Tim Murphy. "Each team is approaching this meet a little differently. I think Virginia shaved, and maybe others approached it like we did with short rest, but I think we responded fine. We just have to try and get the ball rolling as we always do and try to get a little bit better. There are a lot of swims left and a long way to go."

As a team, Penn State ranks sixth with 59 points so far. The host and fourth-ranked Bulldogs lead the meet with 285.5 points.

At Princeton, Knauss placed fourth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 290.40, and Jack Crow (Bethesda, Md.) was seventh with a total score 279.45.

The Georgia meet will resume with Day 2 preliminary rounds at 9:30 a.m., while the Princeton meet will resume at 11 a.m. Finals in Georgia will start at 5 p.m. and in Princeton at 6 p.m.
