NEW HAVEN, Conn. ââ'¬" Despite continuing success for Penn State in the diving events, the Yale men's swimming team prevailed in a two-day dual meet Saturday afternoon, 189-153, at the Kiphuth Exhibition Pool.

Penn State (1-5) was once again led by its divers, as Hector Garcia (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain) won by a considerable margin with a personal best score of 396.70 in the 3-meter. Connor Scanlon (Laurel, Md.) was second with 328.10 points and Jack Crow completed the sweep at 288.35.

"We were good in spots within the races and we were good in spots from an individual standpoint, but they had a little more depth than us," said head coach Tim Murphy. "It was a tough weekend for us, but they bounced back today and responded to the challenge."

Matt Stasiunas (Avondale, Pa.) and Matt Grillo (Montreal, Quebec) both earned silver medals as Stasiunas did so in the 500 free in 4:38.13 and Grillo did the same in the 100 freestyle in 46.52. Additionally, David Gross (Perryville, Md.) earned a bronze in the 200 backstroke in 1:52.60.

Tomer Zamir (Gesher Haziv, Israel) continued a strong weekend, posting one of the top times in the 100 butterfly of 51.02, while Gunther Cassell (Long Island, N.Y.) was also strong in the 200 breaststroke, touching in 2:06.36.

In one of their best performances of the day, the Lions came a fraction of a second short of posting the top time in the 400 freestyle relay to conclude the event, as Statsiunas, Zamir, Grillo and Zach Kantz (Mount Bethel, Pa.) completed it in 3:03.63.

"I think we ended up on a good note," said Murphy.

On Friday, all four Penn State divers scored above the first Yale diver in the 1-meter. Scanlon led the quintet with a score of 306.20, and was closely followed by Garcia at 301.55. Crow rounded out the countable scores at 287.00, while Logan Knauss was fourth with a score of 281.20.

Yale held the edge in the swimming events though to overtake the Nittany Lions' early lead.

Zamir led the Lions with a pair of top-three finishes, placing third in the 50 freestyle in 21.15 seconds and second in the 100 backstroke in 50.33 seconds.

Newcomer Joao Pedro Cervone made a strong debut in his first meet for Penn State, placing third in the 200 freestyle in 1:40.42. He was followed by Stasiunas who touched just .01 second later in 1:40.43. Andrew Schuehler (Camden, N.J.) and Cassell tied for third in the 100 breaststroke in 57.71.
