COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Penn State women's hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to non-conference opponent Ohio State Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Buckeyes (7-12-0) took a 1-0 lead at the 7:00 mark of the first period as defenseman Lauren Boyle netted the first goal of her collegiate career. Heading into the first intermission, Ohio State held a 1-0 lead over the Nittany Lions (4-13-4) with a shot advantage of 8-7.
Both offenses tallied goals in the second period, as the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes exchanged goals within a two-minute span.
Midway through the second period, freshman Hannah England (Simi Valley, Calif.) netted her second goal as a Nittany Lion to tie the game at one. Though less than two minutes later, Ohio State took the 2-1 lead on Jessica Dunne's first goal of the season at the 13:32 mark.
On the England goal, senior Shannon Yoxheimer (Jackson, Mich.) and freshman Victoria Samuelsson (Leksand, Sweden) were credited with the assists. Yoxheimer's assist was the fifth of her season, while Samuelsson netted her seventh assist of the 2015-16 season.
At the end of the second period, shots were tied at 12 apiece with the Nittany Lions edging Ohio State, 5-4, in shots during the middle frame.
In the final period, both teams combined for six penalties, which totaled 23 penalty minutes. The Nittany Lions went for 0-for-2 on the power play during the final frame, which included a five-minute major after Breanne Grant was called for checking from behind at the 2:19 mark.
With 1:20 left in regulation, the Nittany Lions emptied the net and brought an extra attacker onto the ice. Despite playing with an extra attacker in the final 1:20 of regulation, the Nittany Lions were unable to tie the game at two. Penn State outshot Ohio State, 9-2, in the final stanza.
In net, Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, Calif.) made 12 saves for the Blue and White while Alex LaMere tallied 20 saves for OSU.
Neither team recorded a power play goal as Penn State went 0-for-4 and Ohio State went for 0-for-2.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow at 2:07 p.m. inside the OSU Ice Rink.
