FINAL STATISTICS

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State women's basketball team had a two-game winning streak snapped by No. 5/5 Maryland on Wednesday (Jan. 27) evening in an 89-53 setback at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Sophomore Lindsey Spann (Laurel, Md.) led the Lady Lions (8-12, 3-6 B1G) with 14 points and freshman Teniya Page (Chicago, Ill.) marked her fifth-straight double-digit scoring effort with 10 points. Page also added four assists and two rebounds to her stat line for the Blue and White.

Candice Agee (Victorville, Calif.), Brianna Banks (Newnan, Ga.) and Kaliyah Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) each added eight points, while Sarah McMurtry (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored her first collegiate points with a three-pointer late in the game. As a team, Penn State shot 34 percent from the floor and scored 12 fast break points compared to Maryland's four.

On the boards, Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) pulled down 10 rebounds before fouling out, while Ashanti Thomas (Lexington, Ky.) had five boards for the Lady Lions.

Junior Shatori Walker-Kimbrough was the leading scorer for the Terrapins (17-2, 6-1 B1G), pacing all players with 25 points, while Brionna Jones was the only other Maryland player to reach double digits notching a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards.

It was a close game early, as the Lady Lions battled back from five-point deficit to come within one of the Terrapins, 11-10, on an Agee hook shot off an in-bound play with 4:34 left to play in the first quarter. Maryland answered with a 10-2 run to close out the first quarter with the 21-12 advantage over Penn State.

The Blue and White opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run, capped off by an and-one play from Banks to knot the score at 21-21 with 6:20 remaining in the half. Following the run, Penn State suffered a 5:10 scoring draught, allowing Maryland to take a 39-24 lead into the locker room at the half.

Despite forcing three Terrapin turnovers and a timeout after trapping the ball in the corner, Penn State was unable to generate any offensive rhythm in the third quarter as Maryland extended its lead to 20 points, 53-33, with 4:26 to play in the stanza. The Lady Lions could not find a groove in the fourth quarter, either, scoring just 14 points over in the final quarter.

Penn State remains at the Bryce Jordan Center Saturday, Jan. 30 when it takes on the Boilermakers of Purdue. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. Fans who cannot make it to the Bryce Jordan Center can catch the game live on BTN Plus or on the airwaves of the Penn State Sports Network.
