FINAL STATISTICS

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Regulation wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon for the Penn State women's basketball program against Purdue. In fact, the two teams laced it up for a double-overtime contest that went the way of the Boilermakers, 88-78, inside the Bryce Jordan Center.

The Lady Lions (8-13, 3-7 B1G) led by 17 at halftime, but the Boilermakers (16-5, 7-3 B1G) equaled that margin in the second half to send the game into extra basketball tied at 65. The two teams each netted eight points in the first overtime, before Purdue was able to break the game open with 11 straight points to start the second overtime to earn the road win.

It was the first multi-overtime game for Penn State since winning a double-overtime meeting at Dayton, 112-107, on Nov. 12, 2010. The overtime affair is the second of the season for Penn State -- with both coming at the Bryce Jordan Center. It is the first time since 2009-10 that the Lady Lions played multiple overtimes at home. That season, Penn State played four overtime games in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Senior Brianna Banks (Newnan, Ga.) led Penn State with her fifth 20-point effort of the season. She netted 22 points -- 18 coming in the first half -- and tied her career-high with seven rebounds. Banks added two steals and two assists, playing most of the fourth quarter and both overtime periods with four fouls.

Freshman Teniya Page (Chicago, Ill.) played all 50 minutes and scored 16 points with five assists. She hit both of her three-point attempts, grabbed one rebound and had one steal. Sophomore Lindsey Spann (Laurel, Md.) added 15 points with four rebounds, two steals and two assists.

Junior Kaliyah Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) collected her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow junior Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) scored 11 points and notched six rebounds. Whitted added two steals, giving her 14 thefts in her last six games.

Bridget Perry led all scorers with 27 points and nabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to post a double-double. April Wilson added 22 points for the Boilermakers, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line in overtime.

The Lady Lions' 26 point second quarter was their highest scoring second quarter of the season, but the 23 second half points are their fewest over the final 20 minutes in 2015-16.

As a team, Penn State led in fast break points (14-8), the 18th time this year they outscored the opponent on the break. The .947 clip from the free throw line it the best of the season for Penn State, with the team making 18-of-19 from the charity stripe.

After notching the first basket of the game with a layup from Banks, the two teams exchanged baskets through the entire first quarter. In the closing minutes, the Lady Lions worked to find the last shot as Banks drained a three-pointer that would allow the Blue and White to take a narrow 16-15 lead.

With a slight lead heading into the second quarter, the Lady Lions went on an 8-0 run to take a 27-19 lead over Purdue on a Page jumper with 6:56 remaining in the half. After a Boilermaker basket, Penn State answered back with a trey from Page and an and-one play from Banks to take the 12-point lead with 4:39 left to play. The Blue and White defense forced four-straight Purdue turnovers and headed to the break leading by 17 points, 42-25.

The break in action recharged the Boilermakers as they came out on an 8-3 run, including four points from Perry, to open the third quarter. Following the short run from Purdue, the two teams exchanged baskets with Penn State lead sitting at 53-43 with just under three minutes to play. The Boilermakers found its first big run of the game in the final two minutes, scoring 11 points to pull within five, 53-48 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

Going into the final quarter, Penn State maintained a five-point lead before Page and Whitted sparked the offense and pushed the lead back to double-digits, 61-51, with 4:55 left to play. For the second time in the contest, Purdue battled back to within one of Penn State as the Lady Lions suffered a 2:52 scoring draught.

With the ball in Penn State's hands, head coach Coquese Washington called a timeout to try and get the last shot of the ball game. Despite the efforts, Penn State turned the ball over with 11 seconds left, allowing Purdue an opportunity to take the last shot of regulation. The Boilermakers got a shot off, missing long, but grabbed the offensive rebound in a scrum of players. Penn State committed a costly foul in the scrum that sent Andreona Keys to the line with four-tenths of a second left in regulation. Keys -- who was 0-for-4 from the free throw line to that point -- missed her first shot, but drained the second free throw to send the game into overtime.

Purdue took a slight lead to open up the first overtime before Spann stole the ball and was fouled on the fast break. The sophomore guard made both of her free throws to push PSU ahead 71-70 lead with 1:53 left in the five-minute overtime. Purdue missed two-straight three-pointers on its next possession down the floor, allowing Banks to grab the defensive rebound and take the ball the length of the floor for a layup to put Penn State up by three with 1:07 left.

Both Penn State and Purdue missed on their next possessions before Ashley Morrissette dropped a three-pointer with nine seconds left to send the game to a second overtime.

In the second overtime, Purdue raced out to an early lead, scoring the first 11 points of the second extra stanza. The Boilermakers were 2-for-3 from the field -- including a make on their only three-point attempt -- and made all 10 free throw attempts in the final five minute period. Penn State shot just 2-for-9 in the second extra period and did not attempt a free throw.

The Lady Lions will kick off the month of February in Lincoln. Neb. when they take on the Cornhuskers of Nebraska on Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. For fans who cannot make the trip, the game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network as well as over the airwaves on the Penn State Sports Network.
