UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- With the Penn State women's basketball team trailing by just one point with 7:42 to play in the game, No. 6/7 Ohio State used a 13-3 run to grab a double-digit lead on the way to handing the Lady Lions a 77-63 setback on Sunday (Feb. 14) inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
Penn State held a one-point lead after the first quarter and trailed by seven at halftime before outscoring Ohio State 22-18 in the third period to trail by just three entering the final 10 minutes. The Lady Lions made it a one-point game twice in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, but the 13-3 spurt was enough to propel the Buckeyes to the road victory.
For the fifth time this season, sophomore Lindsey Spann (Laurel, Md.) reached the 20-point mark, ending the afternoon with 21 points. It was the 10th 20-point game of her career and her four made three-pointers moved her into a tie for 15th with Alex Bentley on the career charts with 87 made triples.
Freshman Teniya Page (Chicago, Ill.) moved up one more rung on the Penn State freshman scoring list, passing teammate Lindsey Spann (384 pts) for the No. 7 spot on the list. Page netted 11 points on the afternoon to end the day with 390 points for the season. Page added five assists to give her 96 on the season and move her within two helpers of the No. 10 spot on the rookie charts (Tanisha Wright, 97; 2001-02).
Senior Brianna Banks (Newnan, Ga.) chipped in 14 points for her 19th double-figure scoring game of the season and in the process scored her 300th career point as a Lady Lion. Banks also added three assists and three steals.
Junior Kaliyah Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) added 10 points for the Lady Lions and pulled down five rebounds, while junior Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to give her 201 boards on the season.
Penn State opened the scoring with an and-one effort from Spann to take an early 3-0 lead and Banks followed with a three-pointer, but the Buckeyes had an answer for each PSU score, knotting the game at 6-6. Spann connected on back to back baskets -- including a three-pointer -- and Page added a jumper to push the Lady Lions ahead by seven points, 13-6. Ohio State responded with eight straight points to take its first lead of the game, before Banks ended the half with a basket to make it 15-14 after 10 minutes of play.
A 12-4 run to open the second quarter helped Ohio State build a seven point lead with 6:32 to play in the second quarter, including a pair of Kelsey Mitchell three pointers. Penn State trimmed the lead to one point on a pair of Kaliyah Mitchell free throws, but the Buckeyes closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to hold a seven point lead at the break, 37-30.
Ohio State's lead grew to 10 points on two occasions early in the third quarter, but Penn State responded with an 11-0 run, capped by a steal and layup from Banks to take a one-point lead, 44-43, with 5:29 to play in the quarter. The two teams traded baskets for most of the remainder of the frame, with Ohio State taking a slim, 55-52 lead at the horn.
The early part of the fourth quarter was played within one possession, before Ohio State sprinted ahead with a 13-3 run to make it a 10-point advantage, 70-60, with 1:51 to play. A three-pointer from Page accounted for the lone PSU points down the stretch, as the Buckeyes extended their lead, eventually posting the 77-63 win.
Penn State will play two straight games on the road as THON takes over the Bryce Jordan Center. The Lady Lions will kick off the road trip at Northwestern on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. ET. The game can be seen at BTN2go.com and also heard over the airwaves of the Penn State Sports Network.
