UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- It's been the early going that has really hampered the Penn State women's basketball team in 2015-16, but on Tuesday evening in Lincoln it was a 26-point third quarter by Nebraska that was the difference in an 87-69 setback at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

The primetime midweek meeting was almost an exact opposite from the first meeting on Jan. 13, as Penn State (8-14, 3-8 B1G) held the lead after the first quarter, but Nebraska (16-6, 7-4 B1G) outscored the Lady Lions the rest of the way to claim both meetings this season.

Junior Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) secured her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds on the evening. It is the ninth game she secured 10-plus rebounds on the year and her 10th double-digit scoring game of the season.

Junior Kaliyah Mitchell (Stone Mountain, Ga.) led Penn State in the scoring column for the third time this season with 16 points.

Also reaching double figures for Penn State was sophomore Lindsey Spann (Laurel, Md.) with 14 points and senior Brianna Banks (Newnan, Ga.) with 12 tallies. Spann connected on 4-of-6 shots from three-point range for her 14th game with multiple triples.

Freshman Teniya Page (Chicago, Ill.) ended the night with just nine points, but tied her career-high with seven assists. She also posted two steals and turned the ball over just once in 40 minutes of play.

Penn State turned the ball over just six times in the game, their sixth game with season with 10-or-fewer turnovers, and forced eight Nebraska missteps. The Huskers held the edge in assists (26-15), rebounds (47-30) and field goals made (33-23), while the Lady Lions had the advantage in steals (6-3), blocked shots (4-2) and free throws made (17-14).

Penn State came out and traded bucket for bucket for most of the first quarter, before a 6-0 run to close the opening 10 minutes led to a 17-15 lead at the first break for the visitors. Mitchell knotted the game at 11 points with 2:20 to play in the quarter, but Nebraska scored four straight to go ahead 15-11. Banks connected on a lay-up and was fouled -- making the free throw -- and Mitchell splashed a three pointer with 30 seconds remaining to push the Lady Lions out to a one-point edge after one.

Nebraska opened the second quarter with seven straight points, followed by a 7-2 run from Penn State to even the game at 24 points with 4:34 to play in the quarter. Penn State would score just three points the rest of the frame and Nebraska would close on a 14-3 spurt to take a 38-27 lead into the break.

A 23-10 run to open the third quarter boosted Nebraska to a 51-31 edge with 4:03 to play and the Huskers ended the quarter with a 64-43 edge. Penn State won the fourth quarter, 26-23, in large part because of eight points from Whitted and six from freshman Ashanti Thomas (Lexington, Ky.).

The Lady Lions return home for a meeting with Rutgers on Sunday, February 7 at 2 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. For fans who are unable to make it the game, you can hear the game over the airwaves on the Penn State Sports Network or watch live via BTN2go.com.
