Post-Game Notes
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 6 Penn State men's volleyball (12-3, 7-0) fell to Cal State Northridge (11-7, 5-7) in four sets (25-20, 37-39, 23-25, 21-25) Friday evening at Rec Hall.
"I think we just had a little feel for what the rest of the season is going to bring, and the type of match we have to be ready for in March, April and into early May," said head coach Mark Pavlik.
"I think the biggest thing we took away from this is we played well in spirts, when we dropped off we didn't drop off a ton, but against this type of team that just keeps coming at you it's enough. One of the things that this team has prided itself on is after 20 (points) we've been pretty clean through the year, which was not the case tonight. We missed three or four serves in the extended game, aces errors in games three and four late in the game that really hurt us."
Chris Nugent led the Nittany Lion offense with 18 kills on .361 hitting, adding six digs and two blocks. Aiden Albrecht finished second on the team with 15 kills, while also tallying 13 digs to earn Mike Anderson Penn State Player of the Match honors.
Matt Seifert chipped in 10 kills on .714 hitting, while also tying for first on the team with three total blocks. Albrecht and Matt Callaway also logged three blocks apiece. Libero Royce Clemens and Setter Taylor Hammond rounded out the defensive effort with nine and eleven digs, respectively.
After taking the first set 25-20, Penn State entered the second set that saw the Nittany Lions play an extra volleyball with the Matadors taking the set win 39-37.
The 37 points are the most scored by Penn State since April 3 2004 against Springfield when the Nittany Lions dropped the third set 43-41 before taking the match win 3-1.
The Nittany Lions kept the third set close, tying things up eight times with the final tie coming off a Cal State attack error to bring the game to a 23-23 draw.
A Jakub Ciesla kill followed by a service ace from Dimitar Kalchev capped the match at 25-23, giving the Matadors a 2-1 set lead.
Cal State Northridge finished the match with a 25-21 fourth set to improve to 11-7 on the year while Penn State snapped their streak of 11-straight victories to move the Nittany Lions to 12-3 on the year.
Penn State will return to action tomorrow night as they host No. 1 Long Beach State in the final game of the Penn State Pre-Spring Break Tournament at 7:30 p.m. ET.
