UNIVERSITY PARK, PA; MARCH 8, 2016-The Penn State women's tennis team was defeated by Southern Florida 4-0 today in their first of two spring break outings.
After sacrificing the doubles point, Penn State went unfinished in three of the six singles matches. "Credit to South Florida," said coach Cagle, "They played a tough match against us today. We had a match point to take the doubles point and lost a close tiebreaker."
In singles play at No. 1 Kim Surin (Montreal Canada), No. 2 Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia), and No. 5 Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) all went unfinished during their singles matches. No. 3 resulted in a loss for the Nittany Lions; Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Ariz.) was defeated by Olga Martinez 6-3, 6-2. Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) fell to Vanja Klaric at No. 4, 6-0, 6-3 and Samantha Tutelman (New York, N.Y.) was defeated at No. 6 singles 6-2, 6-1.
During doubles action, partners McCluskey and Surin hold a 2-1 record at No. 1 doubles for the spring and defeated Bessonova and Martinez 6-3. Zuhse and Whiteaway fell to Cardosa and Chaves at No. 2 6-4, and Southern Florida clinched the doubles point after Murphy and Klaric defeated Blik and Tutelman 7-6(5).
