UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The No. 10 Nittany Lion women's lacrosse team went cold midway through the first half and Cornell finished the game on an 8-2 run for a 10-7 victory Wednesday evening at Penn State Lacrosse Field.

Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) tallied a hat trick and hit the 40-goal mark for the second time in her career and goalkeeper Emi Smith (Denver, Colo.) turned aside 10 shots in the loss.

Penn State (9-4, 1-1 Big Ten) stormed out to a 5-2 lead in the opening 13:07 of the game, playing its usual high-octane pace. Cornell (10-1, 4-0 Ivy League) methodically chipped away at the lead and scored the final four goals of the half to gain a 6-5 advantage led by Joey Coffy's four goals.

The Big Red stretched the lead to 8-5 with 24:22 and Penn State was playing catch up the rest of the way. Cyr's goal with 21:11 remaining halted the 6-0 Cornell run, but the Big Red took the air out of the ball with a lengthy possession that led to an Amie Dickson free-position goal with 15:04 remaining and a 9-6 lead. PSU's scoring drought lasted 25:42.

Taylor Reed made it 10-6 with 9:56 to go after another long possession for Cornell before Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) dashed through the Big Red defense with 6:19 remaining. Lazo finished with three points on two goals and an assist.

Penn State and Cornell traded possessions down the stretch, with the Nittany Lions forcing turnovers, but not scoring on offense. Shots ended even at 23 apiece with Cornell holding a slight 9-8 edge in the second half during a very slow second half.

Each team finished with 12 ground balls, 10 draw controls and Cornell was successful on 3-of-8 free-position shots, while Penn State went 0-for-4.

Penn State also received goals from Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) and Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) during the opening 5-2 run. Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md. added an assist and was held scoreless for the first time all season, but she collected a season-high seven draws.
