NEWARK, N.J. - It was a block party in New Jersey as No. 11 Penn State Men's Volleyball wrapped up a weekend on the road with a second win in as many days downing NJIT in straight sets (29-27, 25-13, 25-20) at the Fleisher Center Saturday afternoon finishing with a season high 16.5 team blocks.
Penn State finished the game with a team hitting percentage of .344 totaling 43 kills for the match while adding a season high 16.5 team blocks - besting the mark of 15.5 blocks vs.
Princeton on Feb. 20 - lead by Kevin Gear (Rochester, N.Y.) who poured in eight total blocks of his own to set a new career high.
The Nittany Lions had four players post eight-or-more kills led by Aidan Albrecht (Old Bridge, N.J.) who recorded 11 kills on 23 swings to hit .261 for the match while adding four blocks.
Chris Nugent (Fair Lawn, N.J.) finished the match with nine kills on 19 attempts hitting .421 for Penn State adding six blocks, a career best.
Spencer Sauter (Woodridge, Ill.) and Kevin Gear each added eight kills while combining for 10 blocks, eight of those the aforementioned career high by Gear.
Penn State pulled out an opening set win, 29-27, that saw 18 ties through the first 50 points finding the Nittany Lions tied with the Highlanders 25-25 with Penn State up to serve.
The Lions, following a kill from Chris Nugent, called a timeout leading NJIT 28-27 and returned to the court to cap the set with an NJIT attack error giving the Nittany Lions a 1-0 set lead heading into the second set.
Penn State would strike early and often in the second set earning the first point of the set on an NJIT handling error and never looking back from there winning 25-13 to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Set three became the Albrecht and Gear show as both Nittany Lions hit .667 for the set registering six and four kills, respectively, to lead Penn State to a 25-20 set win and complete the sweep 3-0, the 10th sweep of the season.
Penn State will have a quick turnaround as the Nittany Lions travel to face the No. 2 and MIVA leading Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio Tuesday Apr. 5 at 8 p.m. broadcast on BTN.
