UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Maryland only extended an early lead en route to a 7-1 victory over Penn State Friday evening in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Freshman second baseman Connor Klemann (Royersford, Pa.) led Penn State (24-19, 9-7 B1G) at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double, but RHP Mike Shawaryn (4-3) pitched a complete game for Maryland (22-18, 8-5 B1G), limiting the Nittany Lions to one run on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

Designated hitter Madison Nickens paced the Maryland offense going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, while shortstop Kevin Smith went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs, and left fielder Marty Costes drove in two runs.

Costes drove in an unearned run in the first inning, and then the Terrapins added two runs each in the third and fourth innings for a 5-0 lead. An RBI-single by Smith and a failed pickoff attempt gave the Terps a 3-0 lead in the third. Nickens then drove in two with a single up the middle in the fifth.

The Nittany Lions got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Right fielder Nick Riotto (Washington, Pa.) led off with a walk, advanced to third on a double off the right field wall from left fielder Greg Guers (Langhorne, Pa.) and scored on a groundout by first baseman Tyler Kendall (Boynton Beach, Fla.)

Nickens hit a solo home run to lead off the ninth and Costes added a sacrifice fly for the final margin.

RHP Tom Mullin (Springfield, Pa.) struck out a career-high four in four-plus innings of relief. LHP Taylor Lehman (1-7) (Pittsburgh, Pa.) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk with one strikeout in four innings pitched.

Penn State and Maryland will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 3 p.m. The first game will be televised live on BTN, and the second will start 30-45 minutes after.
