COLUMBUS, Ohio - No. 11 Penn State men's volleyball fell in straight sets (22-25, 20-25, 18-25) to the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes on the road at St. John Arena in Columbus Tuesday night.
The Nittany Lions kept things close to open the match, dropping the opening set to Ohio State as the Buckeyes closed out the set on a 6-3 run capped with a kill to win set one 25-22.
Penn State led 18-16 late in the first set following an Ohio State timeout. Out of the timeout, the Buckeyes went on a quick run to tie things up at 19 apiece before Coach Mark Pavlik called timeout on the floor.
Following the PSU timeout, OSU scored three quick points before Pavlik called his second timeout of the set trailing 22-19.
Penn State put up a fight, coming within two point trailing Ohio State 24-22 as a bad set by the Buckeyes coupled with an attack error warranted an Ohio State timeout.
A Nicolas Szerszen kill capped the set and saw the Nittany Lions trail 1-0 heading into the second set.
Penn State dropped sets two and three to move to (16-8, 9-1 EIVA) on the season, finishing the night with 37 kills, six team blocks and a hitting percentage of .181 on the night.
Chris Nugent (Fair Lawn, N.J.) led the Nittany Lions in kills recording 10 while hitting .300 for the match, while Matt Seifert (Reading, Pa.) finished second on the team with nine kills on .500 hitting percentage against Ohio State.
Taylor Hammond (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led Penn State in assist collecting 33 while teammate Royce Clemens (York, Pa.) led the team in digs with seven.
Kevin Gear (Rochester, N.Y.) and Seifert tied for a team lead in blocks each pouring in three.
Penn State returns to host the final two regular season games of the year as the Nittany Lions welcome EIVA opponents Harvard (Apr. 8) and Sacred Heart (Apr. 9) to Rec Hall with both matches slated for a 7 p.m. ET first whistle.
