UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team wrapped up the NCAA Regional Championships in ninth place Wednesday, completing the 2015-16 season with its second-consecutive postseason appearance. The 13-team event, hosted by Marquette on the Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisconsin, was three rounds over three days.

Senior JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) carded a 69 in the third round, posting one of just 13 sub-70 scores on the day. He finished in a tie for 12th, moving up 16 spots in the final day of competition. As a team, the Nittany Lions finished with a 284, their lowest round score of the tournament, and had four golfers at or below par on the day.

Freshman Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) and sophomore Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) joined Dornes in the Top 30 individual finishers, coming in at Nos. 21 and 29, respectively. Huntzinger, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, had a 72 on the day and a three-round score of 216. Just one stroke behind, Miller had a personal tournament-best 71 Wednesday, ending with a 217.

Seniors Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) and Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) round out the Penn State group with three-round scores of 227 (74 - 80 - 73) and 239 (82 - 85 - 72), finishing in 67th and 75th place, respectively.

Illinois captured the regional title, advancing to the NCAA Championships along with Florida, Arkansas, Florida and Baylor from the Kohler regional. The top five teams and top individual not on a qualifying team from each of the six NCAA regional sites will compete at the NCAA Championship at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon, May 27-June 1.
