UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- For the ninth time in his Penn State career, men's golf coach Greg Nye has been selected the Golf Pride Grips Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
Nye previously was selected the Golf Coaches Association of America Region Coach of the Year in 1993, 1994, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Nye directed Penn State to a national ranking of No. 33 by GolfWeek, with the Nittany Lions posting a record of 105-29-1, (78.1). Golfstat ranked Penn State No. 36 among the nation's approximately 300 Division I programs.
During the 2015-16 season, Penn State was victorious at the Bank of Tennessee, Mountaineer, Kingsmill and Rutherford Intercollegiate tournaments. The Nittany Lions also placed third in a tournament hosted by Duke and fourth in events hosted by Florida State and Wake Forest. Nye directed Penn State to its 22nd NCAA Regional appearance.
A quartet of Penn State men's golf student-athletes were selected to the PING All-Northeast Region Team, announced by the GCAA: JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.), Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) and Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.). Penn State led all schools in the Northeast Region with its four selections and was tied with Illinois (Midwest Region) for the most honorees among Big Ten Conference institutions.
In addition, Huntzinger was selected the 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year. A second-team All-Big Ten honoree, he was recognized as an honorable-mention All-American by Golfweek. Huntzinger recently won a big amateur tournament, the Dogwood Invitational, in Atlanta.
In June, a pair of Nye's former student-athletes and 2010 graduates, Kevin Foley and T.J. Howe, participated in the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in suburban Pittsburgh.
