FISHKILL, N.Y. - Former Penn State third baseman Jim Haley was named to the North squad last week for the 2016 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, which will be played Tuesday starting at 6:35 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium, the home of Haley's Hudson Valley Renegades.
Haley, will enter the game batting .297 with 13 RBIs, three doubles, a triple and eight stolen bases in 47 games. Two of his four extra base hits came at his former Penn State stomping grounds, Medlar Field at Lubrano Park - which Penn State also shares with the State College Spikes of the NYPL - including his first career pro hit, an RBI-triple.
A three-year starter with 143 starts in 146 appearances, Haley compiled a .297 career average at Penn State with 28 doubles, seven triples, two home runs, 64 RBIs, 97 runs and 25 stolen bases. The 2016 season was his best, as he set career highs with a .315 batting average, 45 runs, 69 hits, 12 doubles, 27 RBIs and 18 walks. Haley started and played in all 55 games, drawing the majority of his starts at third base after transitioning from shortstop. As a sophomore in 2015, Haley led Penn State in Big Ten games in batting (.333), on-base percentage (.396), runs (15), triples (3), doubles (9). He started 42 of 44 games as a freshman, batting .265.
Haley was one of two Nittany Lions selected in the 2016 MLB Draft. Jack Anderson was the other, getting picked in the 23rd round by the Seattle Mariners. In 13 appearances (one at the short season A level and last 12 with the Arizona League Mariners), Anderson is sporting a 0.60 ERA, 3-0 record, five saves and 14 strikeouts to just four walks in 15 innings pitched.
