UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State men's golf team played the first 36 holes of the 54-hole Rod Myers Invitational and currently sits in sixth place at 4-over with 580 heading into the final round of the tournament.
ROUND 1
Men's golf ended round one in sixth place after shooting a 1-over 289. Sophomore JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) birdied four of his last five holes to lead the Lions at 1-under, while junior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) shot an even 18 holes to start the day. Sophomore Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) and freshman Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), playing in his first collegiate tournament, both shot opening rounds of 73 with Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) rounding out the starters with a 75.
Wake Forest led after the first third of the tournament at 10-under with Will Zalatoris tying an RMI record with a 65, 7-under round. Penn State finished a single stroke behind Kansas and two shots behind North Carolina and Duke, who were tied for third.
ROUND 2
The Lions finished the second round of action in 6th place after shooting a team total of 580. JD Hughes followed up his opening round with a 73 putting him at even par and in a tie for 14th overall. Cole Miller comes in at 1-over heading into the final day after birdies on 16, 17 and 18 secured him a tie for 19th after 36 holes.
Ryan Dornes made par on every hole except for 16, which he birdied, to shoot the second under par round for the Lions on the day. Dornes sits in a tie for 24th at 2-over for the tournament. Charles Huntzinger was also able to make a late run with three consecutive birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17 to battle back and finish with a two round score of 3-over, 147. Ryan Davis finished the day with a 79, putting him at 8-over for the tournament.
Wake Forest maintained its lead throughout the second round and currently sits at 18-under for the tournament. A two stroke gap separates the next two teams with Liberty (-6), Florida State (-4), North Carolina (-3) before Kansas (+1) and the Lions (+4). Host school Duke (+8) sits four strokes behind the Blue and White alone in seventh place.
Liberty's Kieran Vincent shot back-to-back 67s to pace the individual leaderboard at 10-under. Wake Forest teaammates Will Zalatoris and Paul McBride come in at second and third with scores of 7 and 6-under par, respectively.
Teams will begin teeing off for the final round at 7:35 AM.
